To the family: I spent many years hearing my father speak with great respect and admiration for Dallas. When my dad died three years ago, Dallas was very kind to share some of the feelings my dad had for me that dad was never able to tell me directly. It was a priceless gift from a man I never had the pleasure to meet in person. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know my dad will be glad to see Dallas again. Charlie Edwards

i knew dallas as a football coach at sul ross middle school in the 70's. he was a very special man who became a friend to me and my family. we saw him often at his bbq restaurant even after i had graduated high school. he touched my life early on and i have never forgotten him. i actually remember making him a tie at the end of a year and he often wore it. it made me feel good. i look back and laugh thinking about how ugly it probably really was. my mom sent me the notice about his passing and felt like i would like to send my condolences. and let the family know that you are in my prayers.

It has been many years since I last talked to Rusty. I always considered him a dear friend and have many fond memories of him. He will be greatly missed. I'm sure he is with his old friends, all of which left us entirely too early. I can see the three of them, Jerry, David and Rusty, talking around the campfire again. Rest in Peace Rusty.

I only met Dallas once, while in Texas two years ago, but he was such a friendly person and we had a nice conversation. I am a friend of his family in Missouri and Texas and said many prayers for him and his family during the time of his long illness. We will miss him but knowing that he is with Lord is such a comfort and he is not hurting any longer. May God's blessings be with his family during this sad time.

I first met Dallas in real estate school and one of my first impressions about him was that he was a "true Texan". I never met anyone who was better suited to his name than Dallas. Over the years, my husband kept in touch with Dallas through business dealings and always let me know how he was doing. My husband and I both think very highly of Dallas and would like to express our sincere sympathy to those who will miss him the most. I coached against Dusty while we both worked with Northside ISD. I was at Rayburn and he was at Sul Ross. We became friends in 1970 and eventhough we have not seen each other for years I do think about the great times we have going against each other. He was a fine man that always cared about his players.I am sadden by the lost of your husband, he was a great man.

Dallas' death has had a very profound effect upon me. While he and I saw each other only for an occasional lunch at Tio's, I still felt I knew him well. I always knew that he was the sort of person, that, if I ever needed any kind of help, I could turn to and he would do anything he could. I regret I never took him up on his offer to show me Nine Points Mesa as I would like to have seen him in an environment I know he loved. He was a unique and wonderful person and I will remain saddened by the knowledge that he no longer walks among us. All of you are in my prayers.

I too was one of those who considered Dallas one of my best friends for the last 26 years.He was always so positive, and cheerful, you could always count on a Clinton joke or two for the last 10 years or so, and always good for a fun lunch. The last time we had an opportunity to sit down to lunch was in November, and we both had the opportunity to express the feelings we had for each other, which we had never done before. I was really overwhelmed and I never thought that it would be the last time I would have the opportunity to do that. He will be deeply missed by so many whom his life touched.God speed Dallas. I had only met Dallas a couple of times but I know his mother, Mary, very well and consider her to be a close friend who helped me through the toughest time of my life. Through Mary, I felt I knew Dallas since she loved him so much and spoke of him often. All but a stranger, Dallas and Carol opened their home to me during a Labor Day celebration several years ago after the death of my husband, and made me feel welcome. What I remember about Dallas that day was his very outgoing personality and his devotion to family and close friends. It was obvious that he was an exceptional person and his love of family and friends was genuine. I regret that I didn't know Dallas better, but I am grateful for having met him and that I was fortunate enough to have shared that Labor Day with Dallas and his family.

Dallas will always be "Rusty" to me. We were back fence neighbors from the time we were 7 years old. He would come to our house to catch the school bus and sit with us while we finished our breakfast. I learned a very important thing about Rusty very soon after we met. As young boys do we would argue about who was the best baseball player, fastest track star or most powerful boxer. One day our little squabble turned into our first fist fight, and that was when I learned that the only way to beat him was to kill him, and that trait stayed with him til the end. We had a "camp" on his side of our back fence that was base for countless over night camp outs and raids on the Bandera Rd. Drive In Movie. It was our daily ritual to meet "at the camp" when we got home from school and we stayed there until our parents called us to dinner. The camp inspired countless fantasies about professional football careers, ranches in Wyoming, Corvettes, and, ultimately girls. Middle school and the first 2 years of high school we went to different schools, he to Peacock Military Acdmy then Jefferson High School, me to NISD schools, but the camp remainded a daily ritual. Our tobacco chewing careers began when we appropriated a package of Beechnut from his brothers glove compartment. He had a red Allstate motor scooter that expanded our universe to the far west end of Evers Rd. When he graduated to a brand new Cushman Eagle, we thought we were the original Hells Angels. I could go on because we had so many experiences together over the 50 years we were friends, but this has to end sometime. 
He was more than a friend to me, and I am sure there are countless people who feel as I do about him. He was a true friend who loved unconditionally. He was the true "wysiwyg" guy - What you see is what you get - there was no hypocrsy, no vain boasting he really could back up his words and he was unselfish in his devotion to family and friends alike. I'll miss him terribly. 
Jesus said, before leaving his disciples "In my Fathers house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you" 
Rusty, I hope my mansion is close to yours: when my time comes "I'll meet you at the camp".

To the family of Dallas "Rusty" I want to extend my deepest sympathy for your loss. Rusty was a dear friend to me during our highschool years at John Marshall. He was so very caring and always displayed confidence and integrity in everything he did. I know he will be missed. I knew Rusty in high school -- knew and respected him for being the very good and kind person that he was.

My friendship with Dallas was limited to his sophomore year at Jefferson and a couple of phone conversations much more recently. As a sophomore, he was both a talented football player and very likeable. During the spring of that year, I felt a bond had formed between us. Unfortunately for our team, Dallas transferred to another school and our paths began to take different directions. As the years began to fly by, I would occasionally think of "Rusty" and wonder where life had taken him. A couple of years ago,a mutual friend discovered that we knew each other and put us in contact. In one phone call,my curiosity about "Rusty" was satisfied. Although the voice coming over the phone introduced himself as Dallas, there was no doubt that this was the same guy I had felt close to 39 years earlier. He was as warm and friendly as I had remembered. As we talked, I became aware of characteristics of Dallas that had escaped my teen age head. It was clear that he was an uncommonly caring, condiderate, and giving person--very much concerned with the people around him. It was my hope to renew our friendship. Sadly, life does not always go the way we think it should. However, his phone call was a wonderful gift--the kind that comes our way when we least expect it and have done nothing to earn or deserve it. I will always remenber Dallas with affection and admiration. I can only hope that his family and close friends can find some peace during this ordeal. Henry Reid

Dallas or "Rusty" as I first new him, was the model of what a friend truly is. He and Tom were such close friends that when Tom ask me to marry him that it did include Rusty as well. We are blessed to have had him in our lives. We always new if in need of anything we could count on him to take time to talk to us and help us with whatever the problem. Even miles in distance did not limit his ability to stay close to us. We will truly miss his loving manner and the his ability to give us a good laugh even in the most serious of times.

Always willing to help, give a lifting word and always had a smile. I will always remember Dallas. Heaven has gained...the world has lost. God bless the family and friends who loved Dallas. Don

I met Coach Daughtry at Sul Ross Middle School where he was my basketball and football coach. He played a significant role in my life back then; gang wars and other distractions were just as prevalent then as they are now: he was instrumental in keeping me out of trouble. I?ll never forget one football practice where we were practicing punting he really fancied himself a great punter. He was going to show us pups how a MAN could kick the ball. ?Stand back boys and let me show you how to do it.? Three powerful steps and then a mighty kick lifted him off the ground. The problem was that his feet went out from under him and he landed flat on his back?hard!! I?d never laughed so hard or seen a man turn that red before. We always had a special relationship after that I had to gauge his mood before I would remind him of it, which I tried to do as often as possible. He followed my progress at Holmes and I eventually played football at the Air Force Academy?he was always kind to my parents who are now in their eighties and think he was wonderful?..thanks Coach. He continued to be important in my life by giving me my first job at Hickory Ridge BBQ on Evers Rd. He was one of those people you look back on and realize they have shaped part of your life. I look forward to seeing you again someday Coach?.somebody needs to remind you of your kicking prowess. But until then, I?ll miss you.

Rusty and I went to high school and played football together and worked together at Hormel meat packing co. as very young men. We didn't see each other much over the next 30 years or so but the last time I talked with him he still had that forceful personality as always and talked at length about his daughter. He was obviously very proud of her and I could tell he was a very good father. My deepest sympathies to the family.

Dallas has left this earth but he has gone to a much better place. We have enjoyed knowing Dallas, Carol and Meridith for the years they have been in the Comfort area and knowing his mother,Mary, even before that. Dallas was a strong supporter of all the Comfort athletic teams, especially foot- 
ball and dreamed of a State championship for this football team. I 
believe that we will have that title thiscoming year and I know that Dallas will be watching the game!!Above all, 
Dallas was and is a strong believer in 
his God.!

I have known Dallas for almost 20 years, and believe him to be one of the finest of God's children. He sacraficed the view of one of his billboards for an oak tree. We were both born in Beeville! 
Meredith, your father is so proud of you. He mentioned you every time we met, and the love in his eyes spoke volumes. I know you will miss him, so will I. But know that he waits for you in Heaven; and loves you from above.

We are neighbors and we didnt know Dallas well but he impressed me one day during our recent flood. Dallas was caught on the wrong side of the creek after our road was washed out Dallas climbed a fallen tree in the creek to reach home and his family , I knew this was a special man. What wonderful memories I have of "Rusty"! I was a teacher at Sul Ross Middle School at the same time he taught vocational education...........doing a magnificient job with the boys under his care! He was alway searching for interesting projects for them. Together we came up with the idea of their erecting a greenhouse for me. After much searching we found the perfect "pre-fab" or "kit" greenhouse and Rusty and his boys got the project underway. He bused the boys to the job each day and under his leadership they did magnificient work........meticulous in every detail. The greenhouse is still my joy, and is today as sound and strong as he who guided its building. What a great teacher, friend, and person Rusty was! Please accept my condolences. Margaret Gragg

In this time of sadness, I thought that you might like to hear at least one story that might bring a smile to your face. I previously worked for Marvin Poer & Company, and helped Dallas with property tax appeals against the appraisal district. I now work for Adams & Polunsky. When I first started with Poer in 1988, Dallas had quite a reputation for having had threatened one of my co-workers deservedly so that he was coming to our office to kick his ass. Trust me - this kind of situation has never happened again as long as I have been in the business 25 years. My coworker, Robert Greenwood, lost his job shortly afterward again - deservedly soover other items. Both Scott Johnson and I visited Dallas to "mend fences"...and after seeing the weights by his desk...and Dallas' arms...had no question that he could have easily fulfilled his threat. Up until last summer, I lived in the Great Northwest area of San Antonio and thought of Dallas everytime I ate a meal at Tio's Restaurant. I remember him telling us that the Corp of Engineers showed up to tell him that he couldn't fill in the creek to expand the parking lot...and we all know who won that argument. I had heard that Dallas' dad was a prior mayor of Leon Valley but I did not know until today that Dallas was a coach before venturing into real estate. My dad coached in Arlington, so I can relate to be a child of a coach. It was a sad surprise to see that Dallas died at such a young age, since he was one of the tougher guys both physically and mentally that I knew. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

The photo was taken on 11/25,2000. Paying hunters from Dallas had just come back from a day on the ranch, and were interrupting each other in telling Dallas what a special place Nine Point is. Dallas loved it. Dallas was sitting at the west end of the dinner table. He had just offered dinner prayers, had looked down at his plate, looked around the table at his guests, and then looked up at me. It's a picture of a good man at a good time. RL FITE

A great loss, Rusty Dallas was a wonderful, kind and generous man and will be missed. Many fond memories of our young years. God has made a special place for Rusty.

Dallas stopped by my Hometown of Lovington New Mexico during Quail Season on his way to Calif. pulling a BIG Sail boat. He had the mule skinning Kurt with him and a bigger time was never had by all. Quail was pletniful enough Dallas even killed a few. What a wonderful person and friend he was. It is hard to put into words what a really nice genuine guy he was. I am sure the Lord knows and has some wonderful plans for a person that is as talanted as Dallas was. I will, we will miss you.

I had recently started business dealings with Dallas and found him to be exceptionally honest and to the point. I just wanted his family to know, all the people in Outdoor Advertising that spoke to me about Dallas, spoke of him with the highest regards. Most of them had a funny story about their dealings with him and most commented about his pierceing blue eyes. All of them considered Dallas their friend. Adios Amigo,

As a counselor at Sul Ross Middle School I had the privilege of working with "Rusty." He was the perfect person to work with the boys who had just about given up on school. I am confident that there are men in the community whose lives were saved by Rusty's program. He was a blessing to them, and a great friend to those of us on the faculty.
