Dallas Gerald Sheene Sr., 79, made his home in San Antonio, Texas the last four years of his life. On March 4, 2020, he made his final journey home to be with his Lord. Dallas passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Northeast Baptist Hospital after a long illness.
Dallas was born in Moreland, Kentucky on March 10, 1940 to Willie & Lillie (Sweeney) Sheene. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Patricia Lee (Matthews); his children: Chris & fiancée Denise, Jenny & husband Melvin, Dallas Jr. & wife Tammy, and George Robert; thirteen beautiful grandchildren: Corey, Trey, Savannah, Zachary, Nolan, Cash, Dallas III, John Boy, Perry, Tomilyn, Beau, Thea & Iver Grey. Dallas is also survived by two brothers: Gene Sheene of Moreland, Kentucky & Don Sheene of Newport News, Virginia; as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
Dallas served in the Air Force and the Navy for 22 years. He retired as a First Class Petty Officer At Damn Neck, Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was an Air Traffic Controller on The USS Forrestal. In 1978, Dallas went to work for RCA, then Martin Marietta and finally Lockheed Martin, where he stayed till he was 74 years old. His proudest moment at Lockheed was working alongside his sons, Dallas Jr and George Robert. The running joke was that it was called Lockheed Martin Sheene. Dallas was so proud to have them there with him.
Dallas taught us many things along our journey with him. Being a country boy, he showed us how to raise a garden, to can goods and put up food for the winter, and to fix our cars. He may have thought we weren’t paying attention, but he learned later we were. Dallas taught us the important things we would need when we would face the world without him. Chris has said, “Dad taught us the love of the earth.” He was a special human being, a wonderful father and husband and an awesome Papaw. And if you ever needed a friend, he was your guy. We were all so very blessed.
