David Carl Mullins, a devoted Husband, loving Father, cherished Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend, was born in Houston on December 8th, 1970, to James David Mullins and Randy Lou Firsching. They brought David to their home on Pine Street where he grew up along with his little brother Danny. Pine Street in the 1970’s and ‘80’s in Bellaire, Texas was an idyllic place to grow up. There were Kool-Aid stands and constant games of front-yard baseball, football and basketball. When the street flooded, the kids floated down Pine Street in inner tubes and homemade rafts. David grew up a huge fan of every sports team in Houston. Most of his childhood wardrobes were Astros or Rockets shirts and anything from the Luv Ya Blue Oilers.
David attended Saint Thomas Episcopal from Kindergarten through 8th grade. He played baseball and made a bunch of good friends at Bellaire High School before he graduated in 1989. David graduated from Baylor University with a BBA in Marketing. While at Baylor, David was an active member in the Chamber of Commerce, who was responsible for the bears that live on campus and serve as Baylor’s mascot. Many of his friends from Chamber remained his best friends for the rest of his life.
David met Laura Kathryn Jeter in his last year at Baylor. They instantly fell in love. After graduation, they continued their romance in Houston. They found their church community and got married on August 16th, 1997. As newlyweds, they purchased a home on Pech Road in Spring Valley Village. David graduated from Rice with an MBA in Finance in 1999. After graduation, David joined Laura working at Price Waterhouse. He left PwC to join an exciting start-up opportunity with Network Oil where many of his co-workers became his good friends. In 2005, David made the most important career decision of his life, switching to the Real Estate Development/Homebuilding industry. David’s intellect and personability brought him early success as he made great connections and friendships throughout the industry. Many of the builders and developers he has done business with are still close with him today.
David and Laura welcomed their twins Colby and Cooper in 1999 and their son Graham in 2002. David absolutely shined as a Husband and a Dad. Family life on Pech Road was amazing. Lifelong friendships and memories were made as David and other parents watched their kids play in the streets and in the yards. There were crawfish boils, BBQs and driveway parties occurring regularly. Colby, Cooper and Graham played every sport available, and David was almost always their coach. The years he spent coaching his sons in basketball and baseball were some of his proudest moments as a Dad. Not only was David a positive influence on his boys, but he influenced hundreds of other kids while coaching and leading their teams.
Traveling with his wife and kids was always something that David would look forward to. Whether it be trips to Grammy and G-Daddy’s lakehouse in New Braunfels, family homes in Port Aransas and Tennessee, or renting a beach house in Galveston with friends, he always cherished the opportunities to share these memories with others. When the kids went off to college, David and Laura took traveling to the next level. They began new adventures across the country with friends, with repeat trips to their favorite places. David also looked forward to his annual March Madness trip with the guys in Las Vegas. These adventures solidified their bonds with close friends.
David was such a fun guy to be around. He was a music enthusiast and gifted guitarist. He was self taught, first debuting his talents leading songs at church. As he continued to play he would regularly spend late nights having jam sessions with his brother, brother-in-law and friends. With sports, he loved his Baylor Bears and Houston Astros. There were countless memories made traveling to and watching games in Waco to cheer on the Bears with his best friends and their families. His passion and love for Baylor led to all three of his boys following in his footsteps by attending the university. He loved to joke around, kind-heartedly talk trash with friends, quote old movies, listen to live music and make others laugh.
Following the example of faith shown by his loving parents, David accepted Jesus into his life at a very young age. His faith grew while attending West University Baptist Church with his family. He was a regular in Young Life at Bellaire High School and was heavily involved as a kamper and kounselor at Kanakuk Kamps in Branson, Missouri. After David and Laura got married, their family was active at Tallowood Baptist Church and then Grace Bible Church. David’s Christian faith was exemplified not by preaching, but through his servant’s heart and constant encouragement to others. David was selfless, loving, intentional, and had the gift of humor. Everyday he brought laughter and smiles to Laura and his boys. He never knew just how big and positive of an influence he was on his family and friends.
David passed away peacefully on the morning of December 28th due to a cardiac event. He is preceded in death by his father James D. Mullins. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Laura Jeter Mullins; his sons, Colby Jacob Mullins, Cooper Daniel Mullins and Graham Robert Mullins; his mother, Randy Lou Mullins; and his brother Daniel Carter Mullins.
