David A Garcia was born in San Antonio, Texas to parents Emilio and Carolina Garcia on September 20th 1941. The baby boy of the Garcia’s twelve children. His big brothers: Miguel, Emilio “Nuna", Gilbert, Juan, and Rudy. His loving sisters: Enriqueta (Flores), Lydia (Avila), Beatrice “Carrie” (Morales), Alice (Gonzales), Gloria (Sanchez), and Sylvia (Mitchell). The Garcia family motto was indeed “PURO FUN!”
David was a Fox Tech graduate and member of the ROTC. It really speaks to his character that David volunteered to serve his country by joining the United States Army, ranking as Specialist 4th Class and earning the Good Conduct Medal as a Sharpshooter. He was honorably discharged in 1967. After his time in the military, he later went to study social work at St. Phillips college.
From boyhood jobs delivering the paper and groceries to blue collared gritty positions held at San Antonio Parks & Rec and American Standard Auto Shop, David knew how to get the job done. He was quite the handyman. He also worked at Blackwell Burner where he was a Machinist. He then moved up to the position of Toolmaker for Kelly Air Force Base civil service, all the way through its transition to Standard Aero, spanning nearly three decades of service. A hardworking man with the most magnificent hands you’ve ever seen – so big and strong! He was beloved by his coworkers and regarded as a highly skilled expert and all-around cool dude.
David fell head over heels quite literally when he met his wife Louise at a baby shower and asked to sit next to her, only to fall backwards out of the lawn chair 3 times in a row! The two were married by Justice of the Peace in the spring of 1975 bound by law. And bound by love again at Little Flower Basilica in 1981. Their children are Jeffrey, Christina, Michael, and Rebecca. He was also the father of Alice, Sandra, and David Jude. And a proud grandpa to many grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church attending many of their functions. As well as St. Ann’s and Little Flower – no matter where the family lived, visiting God for Sunday mass each week was important.
David was lighthearted, strong, wise, fair, reliable, happy-go-lucky, funny & silly, soft spoken with a raspy voice – a man of few words but a really good listener and so patient. The best dancer - always the first one on and last one off the floor with his dance partner in life, Louise. His favorite pastime was fishing, the thrill of catching a big one. He enjoyed incessant snacking and had an insatiable sweet tooth - a real cookie monster. He liked looking for hawks in the sky, landscaping, word searches and journaling. Tinkering around in the shed because he just had to stay busy. Sharing beers and laughs with his brothers in their younger days. Beaming with pride with his family attending airshows knowing that we knew he helped build those planes. Vacationing with the family to lakes & beaches, and the ocean. He was witty and appreciative of a good joke, and a jokester himself as he was often pranking the grandkids with one of his several fart machines. He collected coins as well as funny t-shirts. He'd help his kids when they had car trouble by referring to his huge Chilton's auto repair manuals, and with patience and determination he'd figure it out and fix 'em! He'd get a kick out of going to Spurs games with "Squirt", and never missed her games and school events despite working all day at Kelly AFB. And to his children's friends he was regarded as an honorary father. He was selfless with boundless generosity. He was always there for everyone. He was a solid provider and protector of his family. He was cared for and adored by his brothers and sisters whom he learned so much from. Beloved by every coworker, every neighbor, every friend. And even at 84 was still the handsomest guy around! Everyone just fell in love with his charm and gentle nature. A man of peace. The absolute coolest, most supportive, and kindest dad. A loyal and loving husband. Such a beautiful soul. Just the BEST DAMN MAN EVER.
We will miss him dearly as he's eternally loved. Forever in our heart. Always on our mind.
His Celebration of Life ceremony will be held Thursday, January 15th, 2025 at Sunset Memorial located at 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas led by Deacon Timothy Tate. Visitation at 10AM. Ceremony at 11AM. Refreshments at noon. Followed by Military Honors service at Fort Sam Houston at 2:45PM.
