David Carter Hetherly passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2023, at the age of 81 after fighting a three-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, David managed his incurable illness with moxie and faith. He wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible, so on his final day, he was surrounded by his family and close friends whom he treasured.
David was born in Bronxville, New York, graduated from Alfred University and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1972. He went on to work for and retire from AAFES. Once deprogrammed from the corporate world, he became the Director of the YMCA Camp Lawrence in New Hampshire. For over a decade, he taught young men respect, responsibility, honesty, and forgiveness.
David’s last thirty years have revolved around his life partner, Lois. He cherished and adored her. She was his greatest support and biggest comfort. David also had a strong girl dad connection with his only child, Christine. He was very proud of her and loved her beyond words. But the apple of David’s eye were his granddaughters. He loved them to the moon and back and tried to attend every sporting and school event they had. He always told them to just do their best and have fun.
David was deeply religious. He really loved ministering to people through music. He sang in all 3 traditional choir services on Sundays and was a member of the Friends in Harmony barbershop chorus and University Choir at University Methodist Church.
David is survived by his soul mate Lois Wachsmuth; his only child Christine Hetherly Thigpen and her husband Justin; grandchildren Caidyn Alexis and Alexa Jayde Thigpen; grand-dog Cash; ex-wife Dr. Vroni Hetherly; best friends Andy and Karen Viger; and a passionate group of singers, parishioners, camp family and amazing friends.
David's Memorial Service will be held at the University Methodist Church Sanctuary on 5084 De Zavala Road in San Antonio, TX 78255. It is this Thursday, Oct 19 at 10:30am.
It can be live streamed at: https://theu.online.church/
