'What a beautiful write-up of David's life. We are sorry that we couldn't attend the funeral, Larry's service days of flying were not enjoyable. He now fears the thought of flying. 'It was with genuine sadness that I learned of David's passing. I was and still am a member of the faculty of the Department of Genetics at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research while David was here. Because we were members of different departments, our interactions were infrequent but regular -- i.e., about once per week. David was truly one of the nicest people I have met during my 50+ years of life. He was always pleasant to speak with: he listened earnestly to what you said and thought about it. I enjoyed the many conversations we had about science, grumbling sessions about NIH, current politics, history, etc. He had incredible wit as well and could be counted on for a good political retort every-now-and-then. David always talked about his sons on a variety of things from their perspective upon moving to Texas, the crazy things that went on in schools, to a jokingly united position by all of us to inhibit any attempt by our kids to study science. It was quite evident that he was proud of his sons and loved them very much. He touched lives of people whom you may be only peripherally aware, but these were all contributions and interactions that are valued still and will be missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to know David.'

'I worked with David at Southwest Foundation. I'm with Dr. Robert Lanford, and David's lab was a few doors down. He was a great guy to hang out with and chat - his sense of humor would always brighten my day. I can remember many occasions when we could joke about the silliest things.
