

He was born in Park Falls, WI, on August 8, 1963, the son of Robert and Roberta Martin. They resided in Phillips, WI, and David attended the local Phillips public schools. As an undergraduate he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, and he received his Ph.D. at UTHSC in San Antonio.
He was an expert in the field of primate viruses and was currently working at Virus Reference Labs as their chief scientist. Previously he worked at Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio. As a virologist he was a member of numerous professional organizations, and wrote many publications in his field.
David was a devoted husband and father - his wife and sons were his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Joseph and Lucille Makovsky; and a brother-in-law, Ray Makovsky. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Bonnie Makovsky Martin; 2 sons, Joshua David Martin and Joseph Robert Martin; his brother, Robert Joseph Martin and wife Alice and their sons David and Matthew; 7 brothers-in-law, Ron Makovsky and wife Marge, Dan Makovsky and wife Florence, Larry Makovsky and wife Kathy, Dennis Makovsky and wife Suzy, Rick Makovsky and wife Cheryl, Dave Makovsky, and Bill Makovsky; 4 sisters-in-law, Joanne Calhoun, Diana Timmers and husband Matthew, Donna Karas and husband Michael, and Mary Jean Peterson and husband Lester; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other close family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David Martin Memorial Fund for his sons' continuing education, at 14439 N.W. Military Hwy, Suite 108, P.M.B. 146, San Antonio, TX 78231.
