David Martinez, age 80, passed away near his home in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Edinburg, Texas, to Federico Martinez and Clemencia Andrade, David lived a life marked by hard work, quiet faith, and generous love for others.
David proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning home, he spent his life as a mechanic, a trade he truly mastered. There was little he could not take apart and fix, and he was always willing to help anyone in need without hesitation. His hands were skilled, but his heart was even greater.
Although David left school in the sixth grade, his determination never left him. In 2018, he fulfilled a lifelong goal by earning his high school diploma, a moment of deep pride for himself and his family. Later in life, his faith grew stronger. He found joy in attending church at the San Antonio Missions, faithfully volunteering at the Veterans Center, and studying Scripture—one of his final treasured purchases being a Wonder Bible.
David was married to the love of his life, Herminia Hilda “Minnie” Martinez, for almost 30 years. Minnie preceded him in death in 2004, and David remained devoted to her memory for the rest of his life.
He is survived by his son, Rudy Martinez, and his children: Kennedy Martinez, David Martinez, Adam Martinez, Vivienne Martinez, and Michael Martinez. He is also survived by his daughter Marlleen Montelongo, her husband Rafael Montelongo, and their children Amicia Montelongo and Mazimo Montelongo. David is further survived by his youngest daughter, Melissa Patin, her husband Michael Patin, and their daughter Kendall Rose.
David loved the simple blessings of life—morning coffee with friends at Whataburger, tending his garden, and growing fruit trees that he happily shared with others. He was known for his kindness, faithfulness, generosity, and friendship. To many, he was the first person to call when help was needed and the last to expect anything in return.
David believed deeply in his faith and trusted in God’s promises. We take comfort knowing he is now at peace, reunited with loved ones, and hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
A Celebration of Life will be held in David’s honor. In keeping with his wishes, we remember him not with prolonged sorrow, but with gratitude, love, and joy for a life well lived. He would want us to smile, share a cup of coffee, help one another, and keep the faith.
