Debra Sara Hughes was called home to be with the Lord on the 7th of January 2026. She passed following a courageous struggle with lung disease. Debra loved and was loved by many people. Her loss leaves a huge gap in the hearts of those who knew her. She was born in Spokane, Washington to Darla and Eugene Kosanke. Five years later Darla married Glen Roger Jones who became Debra’s loving and caring stepfather.
Because of her stepfather Glen’s Air Force career, her family moved numerous times across the country. After graduating from high school in Georgia, she used each new location to earn credits toward a degree in Nursing. She finally achieved her Nursing degree in 1975 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and after passing her State Boards became a Registered Nurse. At that time, she met and married her husband, Terrill Wayne Hughes who was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. That turned into a fifty-year love affair.
In 1976, she was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force, which began a 26-year Air Force career that took her and Terry all over the country and the world. She served tours in Florida, California, Korea, Mississippi, Texas, The Philippines, then back to Texas, first at Lubbock, and finally to San Antonio where she retired in 2002. She had numerous and diverse jobs throughout her career, including staff nurse, instructor at the Military Indoctrination for Medical Service Officers (MIMSO), assistant chief nurse, and finally a squadron commander at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio.
She was very proud of her military service and especially proud of the many wonderful people she was blessed to meet and work with. She was most proud of her family, including her son, Alan Hughes who passed in 2002; her son, Weston Hughes and her husband, Terry, who also served in the Air Force for 21 years. She loved her family more than anything in the world and they were always her first priority. Debra is also survived by her brother, Scott E. Jones, sister-in-law, Tabitha Jones; niece, Ashley Lucas and her husband, Tony Lucas all of Phoenix, Arizona.
After retiring from the Air Force in 2002, she became a full-time health care consultant, working with several different health related companies. She leaves a lasting and loving memory for her surviving husband, Terry Hughes, and her son, Weston Hughes, and for all the people whose lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at the Porter Loring Mortuary North located at 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio 78232. Debra will be buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
