

Delbert met Darlene in the 3rd grade and were close friends throughout school until they were decorating for the Junior Prom when he asked her out for the first time and from there, they became lifetime partners. Delbert liked to say that he met his future wife on a ladder. He was very active in High School football with the Phillips Blackhawks where he was a football standout.
He attended Oklahoma State University, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. While attending college he was active in the school’s ROTC program. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army as an officer and served as a company commander in Berlin Germany. Before enlistment he worked for Southwestern Bell where he returned to after his enlistment was over.
Delbert worked for Southwestern Bell for a total of 36 years. During his time with them he lived in Oklahoma until the corporate offices were moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In 2000 Delbert moved again when the corporate offices were again moved this time to San Antonio, Texas where he settled down during his retirement.
Delbert’s passion was traveling in his travel trailer specifically with the love of his life, finding the perfect place to fish. They enjoyed just getting in the trailer and saying let’s go this direction this time, never knowing for sure where they would go, or even for how long.
Delbert also enjoyed spending time with his son and daughter while coaching their little league teams. He was also the equipment manager of the Little League Association while living in St. Louis.
He was preceded in death by, parents, Wilma and Noland Duncan, and sister, Barbara Counts. Delbert is survived by wife, Darlene Duncan; son, Robert L. Duncan; daughter, Teresa D. Essman; grandchildren, Braeden Duncan, Kennedy Duncan, May Essman, and Andrew Essman.
Interment will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, February 17, 2023 at 10:30 with military honors.
