

Dr. Donald G. McEwen, IV, age 44, passed away April 2, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born May 2, 1969, in Royal Oak, Michigan. He graduated from Shrine of the Little Flower High School and completed his undergraduate studies at Illinois Wesleyan University. Dr. McEwen earned his Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. McEwen accepted a faculty position at the University of Texas Health Science Center at the Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute in 2005. As a developmental biologist, he took a genetic and biochemical approach to the analysis of signaling pathways involved in cancer.
Don was a lifelong lover of ice hockey. He played for many years when he was growing up and continued to follow the games of his favorite teams. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts and served as Pack Master for Pack 500 of the Alamo Area Council for three years.
His love of model rockets, and cars helped him oversee Pinewood Derby and Space Derby events. He enjoyed woodworking, geocaching with his boys, as well as fishing and camping. He was an avid traveler and enjoyed scuba diving and hang gliding as a vacation activity. He loved the serenity of the water and walking on the beach.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald G. McEwen, III. Dr. McEwen is survived by his wife, Dr. Sandra Drabik; sons, Ian McEwen and Evan McEwen; mother, Patricia McEwen Capello (Donald); brothers, Brian McEwen and Kim Capello (Jodi); sisters, Jodie Roth (Jason) and Kristin Hendren (Dennis); grandparents, Gordon and Bernadine McEwen; many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Elizabeth Bakos, his aunt, and Ken Drabik, his brother-in-law.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
