Doris was born December 10, 1931 in Detroit, MI to Walter Joseph Milan and Martha Dubitsky Milan. She was their second child and the eldest daughter of five children. The family lived on a small farm in Almont, MI.
Doris attended Henry Ford Hospital Nursing School in Detroit, and moved to Texas to work at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. It was here she met her future husband, Dr. William Otho Gillean, Jr., then a medical student studying psychiatry. The couple eventually settled in San Antonio to raise a family, and Doris became a longtime member of the St. Matthew’s Catholic Church.
Doris loved being a nurse, and her career spanned many disciplines, including psychiatric care. Later she served as the private nurse for Mr. H.J. Lutcher Stark of Orange, TX. After retiring, Doris proudly served as a Director of UpJohn in San Antonio.
Doris valued her children’s education and was actively involved in many of their school activities. She was a longtime Detroit Tigers fan, and a fervent fan of all University of Texas Athletics. Doris possessed the “gift of gab,” and her genuine interest in people meant never a lull in conversation. She especially enjoyed reminiscing about her past adventures, her trip to Europe, and road trips with her husband and children. She loved her grandchildren, Bruce Springsteen, and Paul Simon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Walter Milan of Detroit, MI; and sister Joan Briston of Keizer, OR.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, William Otho Gillean, Jr. M.D of Austin, TX; son William Otho Gillean, III and wife, Kara of Katy, TX; three daughters, Julia Gillean M.D., and husband, Michael Seay of Rockwall, TX, Martha Schamber, and husband Brad, of Austin, TX, and Anne Michel of Austin, TX; sister Jean Schwartz of Deerfield, IL, and brother Tom Milan of Canyon Lake, CA; and nine grandchildren, Justine, Madeline, Ethan, Arianna, Will, Atticus, Hartley, Megan, Abigail, and Jackson.
