Dorothy Caroline Brock, 82, of San Antonio, Texas passed away at home on Sunday, May 24 following a lengthy battle with dementia. Caroline was born in Tucson, Arizona to Frank and Wilhelmina Marsh. The family later moved to El Paso, Texas where Caroline graduated from Austin High School and Texas Western University.
She married William J. (Bill) Brock in 1953 and in 1954 with their first child in tow they moved to the windblown Peninsula of Paraguana in Venezuela, where Bill worked for the Creole Petroleum Corporation developing the Refineria de Amuay. One of the original families of the new town of Judibana, they lived there until Bill’s retirement in 1983, forming a strong bond with the Venezuelan community and all of the expatriates who passed through on their assignments.
Following a brief return to El Paso, they moved to San Antonio in 1991. Up until her failing health prevented her participation, Caroline was an active bridge player and enjoyed the Oakwell Farms bridge group. She enjoyed quilting, weaving and gardening and was a member of the Castle Hills First Baptist Church.
Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother George Marsh, brother-in-law Rex Dempsey, and sisters-in-law F. J. Dempsey, Velma Marsh and Gloria Johnson. Caroline is survived by her daughter Kathryn Brock Lux (Steve), Randy Brock (Betsy), Alan Brock and Kristina Brock Staskawicz (Daniel). She is also survived by her brother Dan Marsh and by grandchildren Megan Meekins (Ben), Kaitlin Brock, Zachary Brock, Tyler Brock, Erin Brock, Brock Staskawicz and Catherine Staskawicz. She is survived as well by step-grandchildren Karin Lawler (Rob), Brian Casner, Andrew Casner and Emily Casner; her two great-grandsons, Ronnie & Sam Lawler, numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins, Norman Wicks and Dan Wicks.
Throughout her battle with dementia, Caroline was cared for by a great group of caregivers: Lois Nolan, Felis Roque, Olga Morgan, Elizabeth Smith, Mary Alice Carranza, Ana Acantar and Griselda Aguilar. The family is eternally grateful for the loving care, friendship and affection these ladies shared with Caroline and the family. A Special Thanks to Southern Care Hospice for their support and care of Caroline.
A memorial service for Caroline will be held at 3:00 p.m. on May 28, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association to support research for a cure, the San Antonio Humane Society or Father Flanagan’s Boys Town.
