Dorothy was a miracle baby, born in the East Texas town of Longview at 28 weeks in 1933. She was so tiny that when her father first saw her, he remarked that she was no bigger than a dot. Hence, she got the nickname “Dottie,” which is how everyone would always know her.
Her parents were Minnie Pearl Owen Long, a homemaker, and Leland Francis Long, a well-regarded East Texas oil business entrepreneur.
Dottie graduated from The Leelanau School in Michigan. She earned a Bachelor of Education from The University of Texas at Austin where she was a proud member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity and later earned a Masters of Arts in Education from Lamar University. She taught middle school English and Spanish in Beaumont for 38 years before retiring in 1995 and relocating to San Antonio.
Dottie was predeceased by her husband, Edward Williams Crane; husband, Tom Bryan Livesay; former husband, Felix Lewis Burrus; son, Felix “Lex” Lewis Burrus; brother, William Long; and sisters, Virginia Long Nunn and Mary Jo Long Rauscher. She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Burrus Shiflet, Heather Livesay Massa (Joe) and Alicia Livesay Pirtle (Todd); grandchildren, Wilson Calvert, Olivia Calvert Faulkner, Reid Gieseke, Max Gieseke, Victoria Massa, Quinn Pirtle, Thomas Pirtle and Julia Pirtle; and two great-grandchildren, Miki Toth and Levi Calvert. The family wishes to thank longtime friends Laura and Polo Garza for their devotion and support to Ed and Dottie.
Dottie loved spending time with her friends and family, going to the theater, traveling, dancing, throwing and attending fabulous parties, playing bridge, shopping and enjoying good Tex Mex. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Beaumont, a docent at the McNay Museum of Art for 20 years and a proud member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. She jokingly claimed three of her unique talents in life were parallel parking, sun tanning and finding a great bargain.
Dottie will be remembered by all those she met for her vivacious spirit, her beauty and her warm friendship.
Whenever Dottie would say goodbye to her friends and loved ones, she would say, “I love you, I love you, I love you.”
We love, love, love you, too. Cheers.
The family asks for no flowers; memorial donations are requested to go to First Presbyterian Church in her name.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 404 N. Alamo St. San Antonio, Texas, 78205.
