Dorothy Elizabeth Carroll Massy, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 16, 1920 to Charles William and Madeline Kulzer Carroll, passed away in San Antonio on October 21, 2012. Educated in Philadelphia schools, she finished her secondary education at the Ogontz School for Girls. At Wells College in Aurora, New York, she was an active member of the student council and Senior Class President when she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942.
After graduation, she and her parents moved to San Antonio, where in 1945 she married Gerald William Massy III, then an Army/Air Corps Lieutenant and flight instructor at Randolph Field. They enjoyed an adventurous life together, raising two daughters and traveling the world. After retiring from the Air Force, they were both devoted to their adopted home of San Antonio.
Dorothy spent many years volunteering with the San Antonio Symphony, both on its Board and with the San Antonio Symphony League. Both she and her husband were ardent believers that a major city must have a professional orchestra to be well-rounded. Dorothy and Jerry also formed many of their closest friendships through their energetic involvement with these organizations.
Dorothy was also an active member of the Tuesday Musical Club and the Military Civilian Club ~ she will be remembered for her outstanding record of involvement and support of all these endeavors. Professionally, she was an elementary school librarian and, after her parents' deaths, involved in the family business, Universal Bookbindery, until it was sold in 1980.
Always a gracious hostess and spirited personality, she enjoyed many years of health, facing aging and her final illness with courage and great humor.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Madeline ("Lynn") and Larry Amos; and Janet Massy, all of San Antonio. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the country.
Her many friends and devoted family will miss her humor, her generosity of spirit, her love of beauty and her zest for life. The family is grateful to Inspiris/Evercare Hospice and to the loving caretakers who assisted her so faithfully over the past year.
