

Born on August 16, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Kramer received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1956 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1960. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in 1961 and his Residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in 1964. Dr. Kramer then completed his Fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York in 1967.
Dr. Kramer relocated to San Antonio in 1972 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center. He established the first cardiac Cath lab at the Audie Murphy V A Hospital San Antonio in 1974. Dr. Kramer was in the private practice of cardiology in San Antonio for many years before becoming Chief of Cardiology at the Olin E. Teague V.A. Hospital in Temple, Texas in 2008. During his years of private practice, Dr. Kramer was instrumental in establishing the Heart Transplant Program in San Antonio.
Dr. Kramer was a member of many prestigious professional organizations including a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Council on Clinical Cardiology, American Heart Association, and the Society for Endovascular Surgery to name but a few.
David enjoyed reading, hunting and traveling. He especially loved spending time near the water and his many trips to Europe. He collected art and was a painter himself. He liked good food and a good bottle of wine and, over the years, he built up a very impressive wine collection. He loved his children and his grandchildren and was so proud of each of them. They were all a source of joy and he took pride in their accomplishments. He adored his wife and was so grateful for the many years they had together.
Husband, father, grandfather, friend. A man of many skills and interests and a respected cardiologist. There are countless stories of the lives he touched and the lives he saved. So many friends, colleagues, and admirers. He left a legacy that will be long remembered, and we will miss him.
Dr. Kramer is survived by his wife, Janette Kramer; son Stephen Kramer (Ilene), daughter Margie O’Krent (Sam), son Marty Kramer (Jennifer); grandchildren Matt Kramer, Ian Kramer (Jessie), Julia Kramer and Grant Kramer; and sister Ginger Portnoy. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Andrea Street and John Street. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Samuel Kramer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on March 8, 2024, at 11:00 am at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E. 78232, followed by a reception. A private family burial will be held at Mission Burial Park North (Dominion) at a later time.
