Born on August 14, 1937, in Austin, TX, to Ottis and Leona Henderson, he lived a life marked by thoughtfulness, dedication to education, and a deep commitment to environmental causes.
Dwight's journey through life was one of purpose and passion. After a distinguished career in academia, he retired in 2006 as a Dean of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration. He was not only a mentor to his colleagues but also a true friend, remembered fondly for his unwavering support and the gentle kindness he extended to all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Connie C. Henderson, who was his partner in many things. His daughter, Patricia Ross Henderson, carries forward his spirit of inquiry and love for the world around us. Dwight's sister, Doris Jane Henderson Stevens, along with his nephews, Timothy and James Stevens, will hold dear the memory of a man who was both a guiding light and a cherished family member.
Dwight's interests extended beyond the walls of academia into the heart of the environment, which he championed tirelessly. His commitment to preserving the beauty and health of our planet will continue to influence those who shared his passion. His thoughtful approach to problem-solving and his intelligent discourse on matters of environmental and historical concern made a lasting impact on his community and beyond.
Those who knew Dwight would describe him as not only intelligent and thoughtful but also as a person of great kindness. As evidenced by his volunteer work and service on many community service boards. Dwight was an active and well-respected volunteer at the Audubon Center at Mitchell Lake. In addition, he wrote several books and developed courses. He especially enjoyed the program "Freshman Initiatives".
Dwight's life was a tapestry of rich experiences, meaningful relationships, and a deep-seated desire to make a difference. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on the hearts and minds of those who knew him. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, the students he guided, and the natural world he so fiercely protected.
