

Ed graduated in 1975 from Ashtabula High School with honors and was a star athlete in basketball. After high school, Ed graduated with an accounting degree in 1979 and went on to pursue and earn a master's degree in 1983 from Case Western Reserve (CWRU). While working his first job at Ernst and Young, he met the love of his life, Mary Martinez. They married in 1982 and lived in Cleveland, Ohio and Broadview Heights, Ohio before moving to San Antonio, Texas in 2000 where Ed worked for AT&T as a controller and financial manager for a number of business units. Ed retired in 2009 and spent the next year completing the construction of his home doing most of the work on his own. He then began teaching accounting and finance for Incarnate Word University on a part time basis until beginning a job as an operations manager for the family-owned Pack-Mark in San Antonio, Texas.
Ed was a devoted family man and friend. Each year, he went on an annual trip with his college friends, Jim Stern, Brian Broadbent, and Kurt Zimmerman. Ed's other trips include visiting Italy with his wife for their 30th wedding anniversary; Acadia National Park, Maine with his children and sister-in-law; Hawaii with his wife and sister-in-law; and Seattle to visit friends.
Ed is survived by his wife, Mary (Martinez) Gierth; his daughters, Clare Gierth of Las Vegas, Nevada, Annie Gierth of Houston, Texas, and Rose Gierth of Austin, Texas; sisters, Mathilda Wilfong of Sebring, Florida and Herta Warner of Ashtabula, Ohio; brother, Rich Gierth of Sebring, Florida; nephew, John (Dawn) Warner of Ashtabula, Ohio; niece, Kari Warner of Concord, Ohio; mother-in-law, Dolores Martinez of Euclid, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Bernadette Martinez, of University Heights, Ohio, and Lori Martinez of Euclid, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Ray Martinez and Joe Martinez of Euclid, Ohio; and Daisy Gierth, his sweetheart border collie mix. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johanna Gierth and Daniel Gierth and his brother, Ron Gierth.
Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, 2016 with a Prayer Service at 4:45 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
