Edmundo Gonzalez, Jr.

Edmundo "Mundo" Gonzalez Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2025, in Bulverde, Texas. Born on June 12, 1949, in Laredo, Texas, to Edmundo Gonzalez Sr. and Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez. After graduating from Martin High School in Laredo, Texas, in 1968 Mundo proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Mundo was preceded in death by his parents, Edmundo Gonzalez Sr. & Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez, as well as his brothers Reymundo Gonzalez Sr., Hipolito Gonzalez Sr. and his sister, Geraldina Irene Gonzalez.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Cynthia Gonzalez; his daughter, Sara Isabel Esparza (John); and his sons, Edmundo Gonzalez III (Amanda) and Eric Michael Gonzalez. He is also survived by his brothers Santiago Gonzalez, Rodolfo "Rudy" Gonzalez (Mary), and Victor Gonzalez (Frances). Mundo is also survived by grandsons Alexander Rey Esparza, Dylan James Esparza, Logan Schwartz, and Houston Xavier Gonzalez. As well as brothers & sisters-in-law Greg and Glenda Erickson and Andy and Erin Vandewarker. He was a beloved uncle to many, Reymundo Gonzalez Sr., Rene Gonzalez, Adriana Gonzalez, Hipolito Gonzalez Jr, William and David Plyer, Jose Gonzalez Jr, Christina Mata, Ashly Erickson, Leah Popp, Natalie Vandewarker, Emily Vandewarker, Emily Rodriguez and Parker Popp. He was a lifelong ‘compadre’ to many, including Rodolfo Plasencia, Tony Perez, and Dickie Lubel and others.

Mundo served in the Unites States Army during the Vietnam War and was a proud American soldier who loved his country. Upon his return he went to school and became a nurse, where he served his community at Mercy Hospital in Laredo, TX. Mundo then moved to San Antonio in 1978, he served at Christus Santa Rosa downtown where he met Cindi. Mundo dedicated his career to serving others as a LVN. He worked for over 40 years in various roles, including emergency room, operating room, home health, and dialysis, retiring in 2010.

Upon retiring, he embraced the role of full-time 'G-PA'. He loved his grandchildren, cherished every adventure with them, and was incredibly proud of his boys.

A devoted family man, Mundo’s favorite times were large family BBQ’s and get togethers during Easter and Thanksgiving, he opened his home to everyone celebrating with great food, drink, and music. Many have shared memories of discussions on the best techniques to BBQ. He was always willing to lend a hand to a person in need and loved having long conversations with his friends and neighbors.

Mundo's love for his country extended beyond his military service. He was an avid football fan, following his local high school team closely long after his children had graduated. He proudly watched the SVHS team take the state title and championship this past fall. He was always willing to lend help or a hand to anyone that needed help or just to talk. He loved adventures to the beach with family every summer and he had the opportunity in 2022 to travel with Cindi to Hawaii to fulfill a dream to see Pearl Harbor.

Mundo’s passing leaves a large void in the hearts of those who loved him. His legacy of love, family, and community will live on through the memories we all share of times with him together and the lessons of life he taught us all. We celebrate his life as well lived, and his strength of spirit and compassion lives on in each of us as he will continue to live on in our hearts.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m., on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
