Edward “Jack” Hansell Miley, a beloved son, father, brother, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on June 5, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on January 27, 1939, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Mildred Mae Hansell and Edward Cooper Miley.
Jack, as he was affectionately known, grew up in Athena, Oregon. He was descended from the Hansell and Stafford families who settled in the surrounding area in the1800s. He attended high school at Shattuck St. Mary’s School and matriculated to the University of Puget Sound where he met his wife, Donna Lee Larson Miley of 58 years. He also graduated with a Masters degree from the University of Southern California and a Doctorate (ABD) from Texas A&M. Jack dedicated his life to serving his country, retiring from the United States Air Force (NSA). His military service was a source of pride and honor for him, showcasing his dedication and commitment to his fellow countrymen. He possessed an astute mind, facility with languages, sharp memory for details, and especially a zest and curiosity for life. Jack never met a stranger and was never at a loss for words, restaurant recommendations, or bad jokes.
In his family, Jack was a loving and kind father to his son, Edward Randall Miley, and his daughter, Kirsten Miley Howell. Jack found immense joy in his five grandchildren, Andrew, Jacob, Luke, Claire, and Lillian, whom he cherished dearly, and who brought light and laughter into his life. He enjoyed telling them stories, making up songs, and being their Bumpa.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Mildred Mae Hansell and Edward Cooper Miley, and his beloved wife, Donna Miley. Their memories will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
In this time, we remember Jack not for the sorrow of his passing, but for the joy and humor he brought into our lives. His legacy of love, knowledge, and dedication will forever be cherished by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
