

He was married to Jo Collins Willliams for 49 years, until Jo passed away in 2006. Ed and Jo had 3 children- a daughter Kim, and two sons, Mike and Chris. Mike passed away in 2012.
Ed is survived by his daughter Kim Franklin, and her husband, Dan; son Chris and his wife, Jamie; six grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas and Allison Franklin, Darby Perez, and Haley and Braden Williams; 3 great grandchildren, Warner and Kennedy Kate Franklin and Chloe Perez.
Ed attended Indiana University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, He was a member of ROTC and was commissioned in a 2nd LT in the U.S. Army on April 20, 1957. Ed earned a master’s degree in public administration from Shippensburg State in 1977 while he was attending the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
Ed served in the Vietnam War as a Major in 1967. He was the Chief of Combat Support/ Combat Service Support, Officer Replacement Division, Office of the Adjutant General Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam.
At the rank of Colonel, Ed retired on June 30, 1985, after 28 years, 2 months and 11 days of service to his country. During his military career, he spent 7 years and 10 months abroad including 2 tours of duty in Germany (Frankfurt in the 1960’s and Heidelberg and Stuttgart in the 1970’s) and 1 tour in Vietnam.
Ed was awarded the following during his career: the Legion of Merit (2 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, Army Service Medal and Overseas Service Ribbons (2).
After retirement, Ed and Jo moved to San Antonio, Texas. Ed earned a teaching certificate at Texas State University in San Marcos. He taught computer science and history at East Central High School in San Antonio for 10 years.
After he retired from teaching, Ed and Jo built their dream home on 6 acres in Bellville, Texas. Ed moved back to San Antonio in 2008 and became very involved with the Wounded Warrior Project at Ft. Sam Houston. He volunteered at the hospital and was a founder and benefactor of the weekly Wounded Warriors breakfast.
The family would like to thank Rio Terra Assisted Living and Memory Care and Hope Hospice for their excellent and kind care of Ed. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Jo, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
