Elgin Clinton Ernst was born in San Antonio on August 26, 1922 to Minnie Kueck and Otto Ernst. After an accident took his father when he was very young, Elgin was cared for by his paternal grandmother in Poteet, TX. He then moved back to San Antonio and graduated from Hot Wells High School. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Italy during WW II. Upon returning, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Agnes Davis of Devine, TX on January 19, 1946. He again served his country in Korea and retired from the Air Force in 1964. Elgin was a lifelong gardener and was famous in his neighborhood for his tomatoes. He also enjoyed cooking, canning, fishing, furniture restoration and building projects. Elgin was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy. He is survived by daughters, Pamela Bell and husband Harvey of Austin, Paula Scherr and husband Mitchell of Austin, April Ernst of San Antonio; granddaughter, Ashley Huddleston; grandson, Matthew Mitchell; granddaughter, Morgan Blackwood; great grandson, Luke Huddleston. The graveside service and interment with military honors will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 9:15 AM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of Morningside Ministries, Kaulbach Assisted Living and The Manor for their kind and loving care of their father.
