Ann was the quintessential Southern Lady. Her parents, Col. Edmund and Lucille Laurey Gregorie, were from Charleston, South Carolina. After her father graduated from The Citadel Military College, his infantry assignment took he and his family to the South Pacific. This is where Ann learned to swim, the hula dance, and surf. She learned surfing from the famous Olympic medal swimmer, Duke Kahanamoku.
Upon return to the mainland, Col. Gregorie was stationed in San Antonio, Ft. Screven, Savannah, Georgia, and Washington D.C. From there Ann attended Edgewood Park College for Girls in Briarcliff, New York, then transferred to The University of Maryland. It is there where Ann met and married 2nd Lt. Howard C. Dehoney in Washington D.C. Three months later Howard was deployed to Italy with the famous 442nd Regimental Combat Team. After finishing his tour in the army, Howard followed in his fathers’ footsteps and became a successful life insurance and estate planner for Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. in San Antonio.
Ann never met a stranger. Every person in the world, to her, was just a friend she had not yet met. She was cherished by her family and friends.
Ann was a fabulous cook and loved to entertain. She hosted many bridge parties at home and holidays were always a big celebration.
Ann also loved several sports such as bowling, swimming, surfing, and after jogging and walking became popular in the 80s, she began walking 4-5 miles daily.
Ann loved being outdoors and gardening was her favorite pastime on the weekends. She and Dad always had the most beautiful yard. She also had many other talents; she knitted, needlepointed, crocheted, and oil painted. She was also an avid reader. She read everything and anything and continued this well into her 90s.
Howard passed in 1984 and it was in December 1986 that she married Col. Lydon Cole. They spent the next 11 years traveling and enjoying time together in San Antonio, Wisconsin, and Port Aransas.
When Ann was 83 years old, she traveled around the world on the Concorde with three of her girlfriends for 6 weeks. She said this was the trip of her lifetime.
Ann and Howard were longtime parishioners and supporters of St. Pius X Catholic Church and participated in multiple church ministries.
She also volunteered at Northeast Baptist Hospital for 10 years every Friday on the 2nd floor surgical waiting room.
Ann was a role model for us all. She will be greatly missed but now joins her family and is finally at peace.
Our family wants to thank Irene Carillo and Judy Mendiola for their tireless hours spent to take care of Ann day and night for the past eight years. Their dedication was outstanding.
Ann is survived by her two daughters, Jean (Richard) Levine and Elizabeth (John) Tindall; four granddaughters; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and five great-grandsons. She is also survived by two nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Ann is predeceased by parents Lucille and Edmund Gregorie; brother, Ted Gregorie; daughter, Ann Gregorie Dehoney; sons, James Howard Dehoney (who passed Dec. 7, 2022, 24 hours after Ann) and Edmund Gregorie Dehoney; and grandson, David Allen Levine.
