She graduated from Thomas Jefferson in 1942 and Incarnate Word College in 1946. She was President of the Student Government as well as serving as the President of Alpha Delta Sigma, a social sorority. She attended the University of Texas at Austin receiving her certification in teaching the visually handicapped. She taught for 20 years for the San Antonio Independent School District in this capacity.
A sister, Helen Polking and an infant son, Robert R. Hammann precede her in death. She is survived by her husband, Whitley R. Smith; her daughter, Helen Pendell and her husband, George; and her son, Bill Hammann and his wife, Sally.
Survivors also include her stepdaughter, Terry and her husband, Jim; stepson, Robbie and his wife, Joanne; and an ex-step daughter, Cynthia Cox Anderson; grandchildren surviving are Stacy, Brandon, Matthew, Ashley, Lindsey, and Whitley; and four great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church having served on the Board and numerous areas.
