Elvia Ann Cavazos, 67, was welcomed in a warm embrace by our Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 4, 2024, after a joyous life bravely battling a terminal illness until she was called home by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest C., and Blanche Alicia Hernandez; four siblings, Jesus Hernandez, Richard Hernandez, Robert Hernandez, and Ernest C. Hernandez, Jr.
Her list of accomplishments is long but undeniably topped by her son, Robert Thomas Cavazos (and wife Allison Skinner Cavazos), and her love and devotion to husband Arthur Cavazos, sharing 40 years of marriage.
A true San Antonio native, Elvia walked one block from home to Samuel Maverick Elementary. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1974; then earned a degree in criminal justice from St. Mary’s University.
She grew up working in sales at her father’s refrigeration company once located in what is today known as South Town. This prepared her for a successful marketing career that included stints at the Hearst-owned San Antonio Light, the Harte-Hanks owned Abilene Reporter-News and San Antonio-based KENS-TV, and finally in radio at WOAI AM 1200.
Among her career highlights was a two-time distinction as the Sales Executive of the Year by the San Antonio Sales and Marketing Association.
Always a top performer, she earned an all-expense paid European vacation to Switzerland for bringing in the newest business sales for her radio station employer.
She then launched an advertising department at the marketing firm founded by her husband in 1990. Elvia helped usher in a full-service advertising agency that she owned for nearly 30 years servicing local, regional, and national clients. She retired due to a massive stroke and related health concerns associated with her rehab prognosis. Essentially wrapping up a sales career that spanned early newspaper print, radio, television days evolving into the emerging internet sales and social media platforms that are the norm today.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Cavazos; son, Robert Thomas Cavazos (and wife Allison Skinner Cavazos); siblings, Mary Velia Kruse (Dallas), Gilbert Hernandez (wife Terry) of Duncanville; nephew Richard Hernandez and his family, wife Teresa, great nephews Zachary, Nathaniel, and great niece Hailey Hernandez (Fort Worth); and numerous other nieces and nephews.
The Cavazos family wishes to extend its gratitude to her medical team, especially Dr. Paul Smith; and staff, Gina Bruno, and Roberto Alcantara; Dr. Mary Zuelzer; Dr. Jeannie Baquero; Dr. Walter Strash; and the attending physicians at NE Baptist Hospital.
An extra special Thank You to the wonderful people at En Su Casa Home Healthcare, especially caregiver Irene Granados for her dedication to Elvia’s care. Additional gratitude to Texas Healthcare Solutions for excellent in-home rehab; singling out Physical Therapist Pavia Salazar for always looking out for Elvia’s well-being.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the 100 Club of San Antonio, a citizen-driven non-profit focused on providing financial assistance to the families of law enforcement personnel killed in the line of duty.
Elvia’s passion for law enforcement appreciation included her “Hear a siren, say a prayer” whenever she heard an emergency response vehicle.
