Born on June 10, 1939, Emery was the son of Walter Stautzenberger and Ann L. Ratliff. He graduated from Brackenridge High School and went on to serve proudly in the United States Navy. A veteran of Operation Hardtack, Emery was awarded both the Purple Heart and Atomic Veteran medals in recognition of his service. He remained silent about his participation in two atomic test blasts until the details were declassified years later — a testament to his humility and quiet strength.
Emery married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Sadler, on May 19, 1961 in San Antonio. A man of remarkable dedication and work ethic, he simultaneously served as a firefighter at Kelly Air Force Base, operated his family ranch, and owned and managed Stautzenberger Real Estate Brokerage Service. Emery was a loyal friend to many, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Stautzenberger; his mother, Ann L. Ratliff; and his son, Robert Emery Stautzenberger.
Emery is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Stautzenberger; his son, Rick Stautzenberger; daughters-in-law, Lee Anne and Vicky; grandchildren, Matthew Stautzenberger (Kendra) and Caitlin Villegas (Luis); eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
