'(Dec. 28, 2018) My dad would have been 77 today. He almost made it. He tried more than you can imagine. His will outlived his body. In his honor today, here are some more words about my dad, but still not near enough...as if there would ever be enough. The first part is mostly (all but the DJ part) what CJ Johnson had to edit out of the initial obituary I wrote in order to meet word count for printing...like how he was the high school quarterback, won state title in high jump, was valedictorian of his high school class and the scholarship he attained was for his mad skills as a point guard in basketball. He was also DJ for a radio station--I don't remember the call letters, but my mom has a photo that has them in it and last I checked (5-10 years ago) the station still existed! Also edited out were his hobbies: he enjoyed cooking, grilling (he made the best brisket on this planet!), gardening, short roadtrips along back roads, olde tyme country music--his favorite singer was George Jones, attending minor league baseball games, and he loved and was loved by many pets throughout the years. He left behind a cat named Shadow. I think it was also edited out that he was a mentor to many. People he had worked with told Caroline that he had been a mentor to them.
Here are couple of examples of him caring about people: him taking gatorade to a plumber who was working on our water pipes in the brutal heat of a Texas summer and telling him to take a break because fixing our plumbing wasn't worth him having a heatstroke. Also, this year when I was visiting him in the nursing home on Father's Day, he thanked the janitor for working to clean his room on a holiday and said I was his kid and he bet he (janitor) had kids too. Oh, and when I was a kid, after work he drove 35 miles, through rush hour traffic in Houston, to attend my softball games. One time he yelled so loud for me to tag up that he lost his voice for a couple of days! And those are only a few examples.'

'I Am very sad to hear of Emil AKA(Mule) as we knew him, his recent passing. Emil always had a smile a joke and a very positive disposition, something that helped us all while we were kids growing up in Viet Nam. When I learned that he had passed away the memory I have of Emil came back instantly. 
I'm sad to hear he is gone but the thought of him put a smile right back on my face. Thank you all for sharing your Dad, Grandad, Brother and Husband with me. Duane Radke Hillsboro Oregon.'

'Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of your loved one. Buddy was so highly respected by his colleagues for his experience and knowledge, and also for a strong work ethic and willingness to share and teach others. On a personal level, all who knew him could count on his wit and wisdom, and a kind of "steadiness" that was reassuring. Buddy frequently joked about growing up poor, but I believe his richness in character and integrity were the real thing we will remember. He will always be "our Buddy".'

'We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Buddy Schaefer. We weren't fortunate enough to know him personally, but through our son, Brian, we know him to have been quite knowledgeable in his profession and willing to share his ability with upcoming employees. We have heard many of his humoristic stories from Brian and know that Brian admired and respected this man greatly. We know he will be missed by all. The world would be a much better place if there were more good men like Buddy Schaefer.'

'I echo the words of his daughter, Caroline Johnson, in her tribute. She said it best! What great memories! He was a dear friend. He was an outstanding athlete and brilliant student. Our days in Kimble County will never be forgotten. My friend, you are now resting in peace. Your legacy lives on in your children and grandchildren. God bless the Schaefer family during this difficult time.'

'Hey pa, I'll always be glad you were my dad. No matter what. I remember you telling me you were too poor for whatever and later you were too sick...I don't care, I'm still glad you were my dad. I wouldn't have traded you out for a rich dad or one who ran marathons in his 70s--or both! You were kind at heart, truly cared about me, and I credit you for teaching me critical thinking skills which are more important than I would have ever imagined as a younger person. You also taught me many other important things that I have taken to heart and will never forget. I love you, pa, and always will.'

You are the best man I have ever known. I am so blessed to have been able to have you as a father and I am who I am because of you. Thank you for your dear love and wonderful memories! Words can't express the admiration and love I have for you. The world lost a great man but heaven has gained an angel.'
