A proud graduate of Fox Tech High School, Class of 1957, Esther pursued a career in nursing and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse in 1958. “Sammy” as she was known at work, dedicated her career to the U.S. Air Force, working in Labor & Delivery at Wilford Hall Hospital until her retirement in 1994. Over the years, she played a role in bringing countless babies into the world, including those of friends and family. Even after retirement, she returned to assist in delivering her own grandchildren—a testament to her lifelong passion for caring for others.
Esther shared 63 wonderful years of marriage with Richard Castillo. Together, they raised two daughters, Theresa Castillo-Martinez (Gabriel) and Rose Weeth (Scott). She cherished her role as a grandmother to Stevie, Gabriela, Charlie, Jake, Emerald, and Forrest and devoted much of her time to caring for them.
Music and dancing were among Esther’s greatest joys. She and Richard spent weekends with their close-knit group of friends, following their favorite conjunto bands across South Texas. Their home often became the gathering place after these dances, where Esther would serve her famous menudo to friends and family late into the night.
A talented crafter with an eye for detail and love woven into every stitch, Esther enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and macramé. She lovingly made clothes and costumes for her daughters and crocheted baby blankets for loved ones. Each Christmas season, she crafted tiny hats for newborns at the hospital, a small but meaningful gesture that brought warmth to many families.
Esther enjoyed gathering with her family to watch Spurs basketball, Cowboys football and Astros baseball. Family trips to Lockhart to enjoy Kreuz Market barbecue were always a special treat. She was happy to use any excuse to have her family around her.
Her unwavering devotion to family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was very close to her 4 brothers and 2 sisters, always calling to check in to be sure all was well. In Richard’s final years, Esther remained steadfast by his side, visiting him daily and ensuring he was surrounded by love and comfort.
May her memory bring peace to those who loved her as they celebrate a life well lived—one filled with love, laughter, music, and care for others.
