With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Esther Martinez, a beloved wife, mother, friend, and pillar of strength, who left us peacefully on December 5, 2024, at the age of 98. Born in Uvalde, Texas, on February 11, 1926, Esther was a woman of grace, elegance, and unwavering faith.
Esther was known for her timeless style—always impeccably dressed, exuding a quiet confidence that matched her vibrant personality. Her elegance extended beyond her appearance, as she possessed a rare ability to speak with profound impact. A natural orator, she could captivate any audience, always knowing just what to say and how to say it. Her speeches were never rehearsed, but always thoughtful and inspiring, often touching on issues she cared deeply about.
A passionate advocate for education and human rights, Esther dedicated much of her life to activism in Uvalde, her hometown. Her tireless work helped bring attention to critical causes, from improving education to advancing the cause of justice for all. Her commitment to these ideals was unwavering, and she believed in the power of a compassionate voice to bring about change.
Esther was also a devout Christian, a woman of strong faith who found strength and comfort in her daily readings of the Bible. A long-time member of First Mexican Baptist Church in San Antonio, she was an active participant in the congregation, always ready to offer guidance, support, and encouragement to those around her. Her faith was an integral part of who she was, and her life reflected the love of Christ she carried in her heart.
Some of Esther’s favorite hymns, which she often sang with a joyful heart, included How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross, and When the Roll is Called Up Yonder. These songs were a true reflection of the spirit she lived by—strong, hopeful, and full of praise.
Esther was predeceased by her beloved husband, Steve Martinez, a 30-year veteran of the United States Navy, who passed away in 1983. They shared a deep and enduring love, and she never stopped cherishing his memory. She was also preceded by her parents, Sophia Perez and Reverend Leonardo Ortiz; daughter, Cynthia Ruiz; grandson, Phillip Curtis McKee III; 1 brother, and 2 sisters.
Esther is survived by her children, Robert Ruiz, Steve Martinez, Jr. and wife Caroline, Sandra Martinez and spouse Ada, Yvonne Martinez Sotelo and husband Juan, and Izaak Martinez; grandchildren, Steve Martinez III, Michelle Lee, and Cynthia Cuartas; as well as a large extended family whom she loved dearly. Her legacy of love, faith, and advocacy will survive through her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren for generations to come.
