

Mrs. Evelyn Virginia Arquette Forney passed to Eternal Life on Sunday, April 24, 2022, Divine Mercy Sunday. She was born January 16, 1923, in Eagle Pass, Texas to Stella and John Arquette. Before graduating from Eagle Pass High School in 1940 she was a cheerleader on the Pep Squad, played on the tennis team each year, and acted in her senior play. She raised the bar as a young Catholic girl. She attended Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. She loved English, literature and writing. She wanted to be an educator, however, at the outbreak of World War II, she began her civil service career at Kelly Field Headquarters, and then fell in love with a guy from Kingfisher, Oklahoma, an outstanding Army Air Corps pilot. On June 26, 1943 Evelyn Arquette married Lt. William Harry Forney, in Altus, Oklahoma. Managing to keep her family together in good times and not so good times, she was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and a great-great-grandmother! She was one of the Greatest Generation - having lived through the Great Depression and World War II.
She was also employed by the Social Security Regional Office and the Civil Aeronautics Authority, which is now the FAA. Her last place of employment was at USAA where she was a Special Correspondent under General Robert McDermott and a Property & Casualty Insurance Underwriter. She retired in 1983 and became a member of the USAA Golden Eagle Club.
Evelyn was a former volunteer docent at The Institute of Texas Cultures, member of The Conservation Society, The Beautify San Antonio Association, and the Delphian Society of San Antonio. After her husbands death in 1985, she became a Director of Forney Oil Corporation of Houston. She also played a very active role in the various school activities and club memberships supporting her six children at Mount Sacred Heart, Incarnate WordElementary, High School, and College, MacArthur High School and the University of Oklahoma (where all her children attended).
For more than 70 years she was a member of St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church where she served as a Minister of Hospitality.
She is survived by her 6children: Janice Forney Barrett (the late Pat M. Barrett Jr.), Lexington, MS; William H. Forney, Jr. (Carolyn Wolf Forney), Houston, TX; Jacquelyn Forney Hammett (Harold P. Hammett, Jr.), Lexington, MS; Charles Thomas Forney (Jody Masterson Forney), San Antonio, TX; Phillip Dean Forney (Sarah Harrison Forney), San Antonio, TX; and Jeanette Forney Van Wicklen (Steven L. Van Wicklen, DDS), Austin, TX.
Evelyn is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 4 step-great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stella and John Arquette, her husband, William Harry Forney, and her brother, Major (8th Air Force) Leroy Arquette, USAF, Ret.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Hans Bohlmann, Billy Forney III, Tripp Hammett, Johnny Forney, Billy Shoemaker, Keller Forney, Andrew Forney, and Luke Van Wicklen.

Visitation will be held at Porter Loring, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, TX, 78212, on Thursday, May 5th at 5pm. A Rosary Service will follow at 6pm. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, 111 Barilla Pl, San Antonio, TX 78209, on Friday, May 6th at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Peter Prince of the Apostles School, 112 Marcia Pl, San Antonio, TX 78209, or the charity of your choice.
