Fernando, son of Julio and Rosa Lopez was born the oldest of 11 children on May 31st, 1940.
After graduating from High School, he joined the U.S. Airforce and proudly served during the Vietnam War, though mainly stationed in Spain. After four years of service, he eventually began his career as an aircraft mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base. Fernando dedicated many years to the civil service, primarily working on the C5.
Fernando was a hard worker, when he wasn’t working on planes, he was rebuilding carburetors, working on cars or tinkering with electronic devices. When he wasn’t sitting at his workbench in the garage, he was working in the yard or in his vegetable garden. Working with his hands brought him great joy; he loved showing off his beautiful red tomatoes and giant jalapenos.
Fernando was the best big brother one could have; growing up he helped keep the stove burning by collecting wood in his little red wagon. He shared everything he had with those he loved, from making sure his brother had a nice car to take to the military ball or teaching him what he knew about electronics.
Fernando was a simple man; he didn’t care about fancy things. He loved his Dallas Cowboys, his pets, gardening, taking pictures and Latin Jazz music. During his younger days, Nando played the congas for the band La Sonora Estrella and even played at the opening of HemisFair Park. On Sundays, you could find him at his workbench listening to Sunday Morning Jazz.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband, sharing 35 years with his wife Olga Annette Lopez. Even close to the end, he was more concerned about her well-being.
Fernando will be cherished always for the devoted Dad he was. Not only by providing, but by guiding, teaching and putting his family first.
Fernando is survived by his wife: Olga Lopez; children: Joseph, Michael, Charlie, Ronnie, Sonia, and Alfred; grandchildren: Boston, David, Nadia, Mercedes, Ashton, Ashley, Joshua, Jullian, and Joe; and his brothers and sisters.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, Texas 78238.
