Flora E. Damon peacefully left this life on June 15, 2019, with her loving family at her bedside. Her final few days were spent under the compassionate and gentle care of Kindred Hospice Inpatient Unit in San Antonio. Flora was 88 years old.
Born July 30, 1930, in Arkadelphia, AR, she was the sixth of Lillian & John Bledsoe's eight children. Flora grew up in Houston and was a proud 1948 graduate of Reagan High School. She married her high school sweetheart, James Arnold Damon, during his senior year at TX A & M in January 1952.
While raising their six children, Flora faithfully served by Jim's side during his 30 year Army career. Together they moved all over the United States, as well as to assignments in Japan, England, and Germany. All challenges were enthusiastically welcomed as "big adventures". She was an avid volunteer both in her military and civilian communities, leading to her selection in 1970 as Fort Knox Military Wife of the Year. She was instrumental in improving conditions at a Japanese Orphanage, successfully established a Volunteer Fire Dept in Springfield, VA, trained volunteers to work with her in Army Community Service, as well as leading her children's Scouting activities. In 1978, the Damons settled in San Antonio, TX. Here Flora continued volunteer work for both Fort Sam Houston and with the City of Windcrest. At the same time, she had a career as a National Supervisor for Westat, Inc. of Rockville, MD. As an expert in research services being provided to U.S. Government Agencies, as well as businesses, foundations, and state and local governments, Flora traveled from coast to coast recruiting and training for Westat, Inc. In her leisure time, she enjoyed gardening, researching and recording history and genealogy for the Bledsoe and Damon families. She was a gracious hostess, enjoying big family holiday gatherings or just spontaneous visits over coffee with her children and grandchildren.
Flora is predeceased by her devoted husband of 63 years, Jim Damon, and their beloved youngest son, Jeffry R. Damon. She is also predeceased by her four sisters: Mary, Jean, Martha, and Lucy; and her three brothers: Neal, Johnny, and Bill.
Flora is survived by her five remaining children: Michael J. Damon (wife, Chae Son), Nanette E. Gordon (husband, John), Christopher D. Damon, Steven P. Damon (wife, Susan), Casey R. Damon, as well as Jeff's widow, Amy Damon. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren: Michelle Marinelli, Kathryn Luckett, Erin Jones, Nathan Damon, Shannon Schmidt, Jessica Damon, Sam Damon, Samantha Damon, Adam Damon, Nick Damon, as well as ten great-grandchildren.
A Remembrance Service celebrating Flora's life will take place in the Chapel at 10:00 AM on Saturday July 27, 2019, at Franklin Park Sonterra Independent Living in Stone Oak, where she lived for the past seven years. Flora's remains have been interred with her husband Jim at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
