

Flora Belle Hinson English, known as “Skeeter” in her youth, was born in Starkville, Mississippi, on March 2, 1927, to Arthur Ward Hinson and Lona Mae Parrish Hinson. She was married in Houston, TX, on August 9, 1947, to Alvin (Al) English, Jr., Son of Alvin B. and Harrell Kincaid English. Al spent most of his career in Texas, as a band director in Refugio, San Antonio, and New Braunfels; Flora was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked as a librarian and secretary in the public schools in San Antonio and New Braunfels before they retired to live in Conroe, TX.
After Al’s passing in 2006, she returned to live in San Antonio. Flora passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Heartland Healthcare Center in San Antonio, TX, following a long illness. She was 88 years old.
Flora is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Alvin B. English Jr., and by her sisters Mary Louise Hinson and Lorena McDonald. She is survived by her son, Paul B. English of Houston, TX; three daughter and sons-in-law, Leah and J. Dean McDaniel of Conroe, TX, Rachael and Henry Barsotti, Jr., of Philipsburg, MT, and Stella and Mike Poma of San Antonio, TX; two sisters, Margaret Froehlich of Colorado Springs, CO, and Bettie Edwards of Tarpley, TX; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Flora will be laid to rest beside her husband at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers the family requests that charitable donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a Charity of your choice. Messages can be sent to the family at: dignitymemorial.com
