Dr. Francis X. Weixel, MD, died Sunday, August 5, 2001. Dr. Weixel was Port Surgeon of New Orleans in 1947. In 1951 he established the Ophthalmology Department at Wilford Hall Hospital, Lackland Air Force Base and was Chief of Ophthalmology at Robert B. Green Hospital in the 1960's. He was a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Bernardine M. Weixel of San Antonio; daughters, Joan Byrne Hardy and her husband George of Elgin, TX, and Melissa Schumer and her husband Barry of Charlotte, NC; sons, Christopher Weixel of San Antonio, Creighton Weixel of Lake Charles, LA, and Jay F. Weixel of San Antonio; and grandchildren Erin Walthall and Anne Walthall, both of Austin, TX, Lindsay Owen of Dallas, TX, Justin and Kyle Schumer of Charlotte, NC, and Margaret Hardy of Portland, OR.
