

He was a 1939 graduate of Brackenridge High School and 1943 graduate of Texas A & M University. He began his military service upon graduation and served in Europe in World War II, earning the Silver and Bronze Stars. He continued his military service with the Texas National Guard, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel.
Post active duty, he worked as an accountant for several independent oil companies, became a partner in both Main and North Park Lincoln-Mercury dealerships, and finished out his career as Controller at the RK Group.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Louise Earl Sumner and his son-in-law J. Pat O'Connell. Survivors include daughter Janice Castleberry and her husband Joe, and daughter Barbie O'Connell. He also survived by his four grandchildren – those who knew and loved him as "G-Dad" – Rebecca Caroline Cancellare, Christopher O'Connell, Trish O'Connell, and Travis Castleberry and his wife Elizabeth. Additional survivors include his three great grandchildren, CeCelia and Nina Cancellare, and Alexander William Castleberry, his niece Mary Ann Pigott and nephew Jerry Earl and his wife Nora.
