

Garry Vernon Backeberg, 76, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 1, 2021. Garry was born on November 17, 1944 to the late Vernon and Minnie Backeberg in Eugene, OR.
After graduating from high school, Garry joined the Navy in 1961. He served 13 years in the Navy and while in the service he met his beloved wife, Gloria, in 1971. They wed on August 14, 1971, going on to have one child, Derrick. Garry joined the fire department at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX in 1975 where he later retired after 20 years as a Captain.
Garry was an avid outdoorsman and he thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Some of his favorite stories to share were of his childhood and his adventures in the woods of Eugene, OR. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned-especially in his last days. He was unendingly proud of Gloria, Derrick, and his grandchildren and always tried his best to support them. Anyone who knew Garry, knew that he was one of a kind.
Garry was predeceased by his parents, Vernon and Minnie Backeberg, and his brothers, Ronald and Dale. Garry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria; his son, Derrick (Christie); grandchildren, Dylan, Alyssa, and Caden; as well as several nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive visitors at Sunset Funeral Home (1701 Austin Hwy San Antonio, TX 78218) on Monday, December 6th at 11am. A celebration of life will be from 12pm-1pm. Immediately following, there will be a procession from the funeral home to Fort Sam Houston cemetery where Garry will be honorably laid to rest at 1:30pm.
