When I think of Gary, I remember a calm I could always lean on. During one of the hardest stretches of my life, he was there—quiet, steady, and utterly present. He didn’t solve everything; he simply listened, offered the kind of comfort that makes you breathe easier, and stayed by my side until the storm passed. That small, unshowy kindness meant the world to me.

We also shared lighter days — a few rides together through Horse Canyon that I’ll never forget. Gary rode with a patience and easy laugh that made even a balking horse feel like part of the adventure. Those afternoons — sunlight on the trail, the steady rhythm of hooves, and the easy conversation between us — are the memories I hold close.

I’m grateful to have known him. He made people feel seen and less alone. He will be deeply missed.

I met Gary in a place most people wouldn’t expect, inside the colourful and boundless worlds of VRChat. What started as a simple encounter in virtual reality quickly grew into one of the most meaningful friendships I have ever had. Together, we explored new worlds night after night, discovering hidden corners, strange landscapes, and cozy places to settle in and just talk about life.

I liked to joke that I was his virtual butler, always ready to serve him tea or coffee no matter what world we found ourselves in. He would laugh, offer some of his always solid advice, and somehow make everything feel calm and simple again. That was just who he was: steady, kind, and always ready with a word that made things clearer.

We had a small group we would hang out with most nights, gathered around a campfire, sitting in a movie room, or drifting through new worlds. No matter where we were, we could talk for hours. There was always something to laugh about, something to share, something to learn from each other. Those nights felt infinite, the kind of memories you do not realize are precious until they are all you have left.

Hearing about Gary’s passing hit me harder than I ever expected. It does not matter that our friendship lived in virtual spaces, he was real. His presence was real. His kindness and his wisdom were real. And the space he filled in my life is real as well.

I will always miss you, Gary. Thank you for every conversation, every adventure, and every calm moment by a virtual fire. I will carry your memory with me, and I will do my best to keep your spirit alive in the worlds we loved so much.

I’m Ruthie — I loved him.

For a year we chose each other every night, stepping into constellations we made for ourselves. We learned to fly hand in hand, danced in MMD rooms until our avatars moved as one, ran like tigers across the Nord fields, then folded into crow wings and cut through the night. Our favorite quiet was the lake cabin table, where we talked into the night — and on the last night, I heard your last breath as if the world gently closed around you.

I taught Gary VRChat, and watching him learn was one of my greatest joys. He was shy, yes, but his shyness held a tenderness that made room for everyone. He would pause his own world to comfort a stranger, listen until the hurt eased, forgive as if forgiveness were oxygen. He never grandstanded—he simply was. He brought down my walls and allowed me to open up about myself.

We explored caves by campfire light, wandered Horse Canyon where sometimes the horses balked and he’d sit behind me, warm and steady. We solved puzzles, chased horizons, shared small ordinary truths that landed like sunlight. He put me on a pedestal not with fanfare but with trust; he placed a promise ring on my hand on Valentine’s Day, and had it copied onto my avatar. I wear it every day.

Since he left, the nights are vast and the worlds echo with his laugh like tidewater. I am lost sometimes, hollow with grief — and yet full of what he gave me: courage, tenderness, and permission to be wholly loved. To his friends: thank you for loving him. Keep his kindness alive in small acts.

Goodnight, Gary. You taught me how to fly and how to return. I love you still—always.

He loved doing everything, playing game, riding horses, fishing, world hopping.   While he was in the hospital, and rehab, we all kept him company ... he was never alone....

Our condolences to the family of Mr. Walton. He was a pleasant neighbor who gave us a brief and very interesting history of the Valencia neighborhood when we first moved into the neighborhood. Enjoyed seeing him out and about on his scooter.
