Gene Russell

Gene Russell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away on December 21, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born on November 1, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas to Nell and Clinton Russell.

Gene was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who lived a life rooted in hard work, integrity, and kindness. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1954-1958 as a Qualified Submariner. He built a successful career as a businessman in the insurance industry, where he was known for his reliability, fairness, and trustworthiness.

Outside of his profession, Gene valued life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending quiet mornings fishing, enjoying a round of golf, and sharing stories and laughter with friends. Above all, family meant everything to him. He was a constant presence, a steady source of support, and a proud grandfather who treasured time with his grandchildren.

Gene did not seek attention or recognition. He believed in showing up, doing his best, and taking care of the people around him. He will be remembered for his calm strength, his sense of humor, and the deep love he had for his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife of 52 years, Patty Sue Russell. Gene is survived by his children, Renee Baker, Craig Russell (Nancy), and Mac Russell (Anna); grandchildren, Pax Baker (Ben Worley), Savannah Broderick (Timothy), Zac Russell (Nicole), and Logan Russell (Hannah); great-grandchildren, August Worley, Kip Russell, Elle Russell, Gigi Russell, Shay Russell, Frances Russell, Margaret Russell, and Caroline Russell. He is also survived by his best friend and loving partner of many years, Barbara Hartman, along with her daughter, Marcie Silvers, and son, Todd Silvers.

Service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78209. A reception following at the Roseheart Clubhouse on 59 Roseheart in San Antonio, TX. 78259.
