Jerry attended Catholic schools his entire childhood, finishing at St. Edwards High School. The Geiger family would grow to include seven children, with the seventh born when Jerry was 20 years old and already in college. In 1959 his family moved to Cortland, Ohio, and Jerry began studying engineering at what is now Youngstown State University, graduating in 1964. From there he went to the University of Arizona in Tucson on a full scholarship, earning a masters degree in engineering. In 1965 he moved to nearby Phoenix, Arizona to work for AT&T.
While in Phoenix, Jerry married Nancy Tornquist. Their children, Kristie, Bryan, and Meredith were all born there. He completed an MBA at Arizona State University; after just a year at AT&T, he went into the investment industry, originally as a stockbroker, and quickly became a manager of his own office.
After serving briefly as an enlisted man in the Air Force Reserve, Jerry was selected to hold a commission as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the United States Navy Reserve. He spent 28 years in the reserves, eventually reaching the rank of Captain, and commanding six different reserve units.
Jerry and family moved to Oklahoma City, where he initially continued his investment career. While there, during the 1980s, he completed a law degree at Oklahoma City University, hoping to become an oil and gas attorney, but just then the bottom fell out of the petroleum market. His first marriage ended and he moved to Atlanta in 1989, continuing his career as an investment executive, first with FSC (acquired by SunAmerica, in turn acquired by AIG), then with other national investment firms.
In 1992 Jerry met and married Jan Dahlin Geiger, who also worked in the investment business. He became stepfather to Brett, age 10, and Blake, age 7. In 2008, he and Jan moved to San Antonio, originally planning to one day retire there. After working six more years, they moved to Sun City in Georgetown, Texas and retired.
Jerry believed the greatest gift he ever received was bestowed on March 3, 1980, when the wonderful Herman Reece led him to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. From that point forward, Jerrys focus became living a life that would be pleasing to God. Following in Hermans footsteps, Jerry invested considerable time in mentoring younger people both at work and in Bible study groups. He leaves a legacy of many younger people who say their lives were strongly influenced by him.
While in Oklahoma City, Jerry was part of a group that organized the very first mayors prayer breakfast, an inspirational event that now hosts nearly 2000 people every year. Jerry again felt a call from God to plan a similar event in Williamson County, home to Sun City, and he started and helped organize three very successful leadership prayer breakfasts there.
In February 2022, Jerrys behavior became unusual and erratic. After two months of hospitalizations and therapy, it was determined that he had rapidly progressive dementia. He spent his last four months in a memory care facility, passing on August 18, 2022.
Jerry leaves a legacy of five children and ten grandchildren. As the family likes to joke, they all pay taxes and no one is in jail! Included are: daughter Kristie, her husband Mark Stevens, and their children Patrick and Natalie, in Tucson; son Bryan, his wife Sarah, and their children Christopher and Sydney, in Oklahoma City; daughter Meredith, her husband Matt Walton and their sons Jett and Cash, in Austin; stepson Brett Chalfant, his wife Arielle, and children Camden and Carson, in San Diego; and stepson Blake Chalfant, his wife Kim, and their children Bodhi and Rowan, also in Austin.
He is also survived by his beloved wife, Jan, and his six siblings: Don Geiger, Mary Joanne Abraham, Alan Geiger, Anne Harris, Mike Geiger, and Jeanne Nigro.
Jerry loved his family, his God and his country. Being an exceptional listener drew others to him, and his many friends enjoyed talking with him immensely. He will be remembered for his passion for helping others and to mentor younger people, for his kindness, and for the extraordinary effort he devoted to building relationships and living a Christ-centered life.
