

Gilbert is survived by his loving wife, Guadalupe Garza Abundis. He was a loving father to his children, Sylvia Barratachea, Nicholas Garza (Allegra), Analissa Bynum (Colby), Erica Abundis, Gilbert Abundis II, and Mallory DuBose (Andrew). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Paul Barratachea, Candyce Krumma, Scarlett and Erick Martinez, Liam and Addison Dubose, Kendal and Jordan Bynum and a great grandson Atticus Barratachea.
Sisters, Mary Elizabeth Knippa, Julie Need and Sylvia Sims and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Gilbert graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in 1975. He served and retired from the U.S. Army for 21 years as a Combat Medic and Combat Medical Instructor at Fort Sam Houston and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 21 years and was the Vice President for the National Association of Letter Carriers.
He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church Knights of Columbus. He was also a founding member of the Alamo City Rods.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home on Monday June 2, 2025, 5:00 pm family, 6:00 - 9:00 pm public. Rosary will be at 7:00 pm.
Funeral Mass will be held June 3, 2025 at St Cecilia’s Catholic Church at 11:30 am, 125 W Whittier St., San Antonio, Texas. A Committal Service will be at 1:00 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Family is requesting Hawaiian Attire for June 3 services because he loved Hawaii and was stationed there for 4 years while in the Army.
