Gloria R Rodriguez, 91, died peacefully at home December 10, 2022.Born and raised in Eagle Pass, Texas Gloria had full and vibrant high school years with many classmates who became lifelong friends. She married and moved to San Antonio in 1952.
Her legacy is the loving family she raised (with her husband until his death in 1990) and being a thoughtful sister, wife, mother, Grandma Gloria, Tia Glory, and friend. Among the many hats she wore included PTA, Girl Scout Leader, high school band, school sports supporter and excellent seamstress. Entering the workforce as a teacher’s aide she returned to school, earned a degree, and taught bilingual elementary education for 22 years with the San Antonio Independent School District.
Post retirement she joined and supported the San Antonio Retired Teacher Association and the Retama Guild as well as continued participation with the Compassionate Friends Organization. Blessed to have a long retirement she loved reading, gardening, outings with friends and family plus grandkid adventures. Gloria also loved to go shopping, especially with her sister Norma, (we can see them looking for sales in heaven right now!).
Not one to be the center of attention, she did enjoy some epic birthday parties in her later years mostly because it was a chance for extended family to come together. Although a diagnosis of dementia in 2017 affected her independence she continued to her last days to share countless stories and memories in many animated conversations. Lastly Gloria was a woman of faith who ended her day with a nighttime rosary.
She is survived by her children, Gloria A Rodriguez (Wally Perez), Lucy Rodriguez (Bruce Williams), and Cynthia Rodriguez. She also leaves behind grandchildren Ariana Camina and Dalton Williams, great grandchild Bryce Camina as well as many nieces, nephews and others who made an impact in her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rodolfo R Rodriguez; her son, Rodolfo R Rodriguez Jr; her parents Raimundo & Eustolia Riojas, siblings Raimundo Riojas (Argelia), Elia Riojas, Olga Riojas Kypuros (Basilio), Esperanza Riojas Hernandez (Oscar), Hector Riojas (Consuelo), and Norma Riojas Salinas (Alex).
The family thanks her niece Olga Kypuros, and caregivers Lidia Morales, Michelle Garcia, Valentina Reyes, Elizabeth Chapman and Debra Valadez for the loving care they gave Mom during these last few years. They also thank Monica of Trinity Hospice. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the San Antonio Food Bank or organization of your choice.
