
Gloria L. Zamora, Ph. D., nationally recognized educator, speaker and writer died on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at the age of 66 years. Gloria L. Zamora was born in San Antonio on April 20, 1935 to Ralph and Sadie Rodriguez. In a career that spanned nearly five decades, Dr. Zamora was prominent in the field of Early-Childhood Bilingual Education. Her expertise lead to numerous awards including, Outstanding Educator of America, 1974; Texas Association for Bilingual Education "Outstanding Service Award," 1981; San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame, 1985; AVANCE "Outstanding Hispanic Mother of San Antonio," 1988; Who's Who in American Education, 1989 - 1990 and the National Association for Bilingual Education "National Honoree 2000." Dr. Zamora began her educational career at Winston and Crockett Elementary Schools where she taught first grade. In 1965, she was promoted to Instructional Supervisor for the San Antonio Independent School District and in 1967 named Director of Bilingual and Kindergarten Programs for the Edgewood Independent School District, where she was also appointed an Acting Associate Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Zamora went on to teach graduate courses at Our Lady of the Lake University and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Zamora also held administrative positions with the Intercultural Development Research Association, was Editorial Director for Santillana Publishing Company and Executive Director of Educational Collaboratives, Programs and Research of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Her expertise in the field of Bilingual Education lead to Congressional Testimony before the House Sub-Committee on Education and Labor, the Senate Sub-Committee on Labor and Public Welfare and the Hispanic Heritage Week Congressional Hearings. She is a co-author of the NUEVO AMANCER curriculum and the author of more than 40 journals and articles. During her lifetime, Gloria Zamora was a tireless advocate for children and education. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister and leaves behind many devoted friends and colleagues. Gloria was diagnosed with renal disease in 1988 and fought courageously, continuing to maintain a full work, travel and lecture schedule until 1996 when the disease forced her retirement. During the last four years of her life, Gloria exemplified courage, dignity and faith and was a source of joy, inspiration and comfort to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by those whom she touched. She is survived by her husband, Phillip E. Zamora of Bulverde, Texas; daughter, Margaret F. Larrumbide, M.D. and husband Jerry Larrumbide; son, Phillip A. Zamora; and granddaughter, Andrea M. Larrumbide, all of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by sisters, Mary Alice Moran and husband Lee Moran of San Antonio, Elizabeth Torres and husband Raul Torres of Rockford, Illinois, and Olga Larrumbide and husband Richard Larrumbide of San Antonio. She has numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Zamora will lie in state on Monday, September 3, beginning at 10:00 A.M., at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East.
