Gracie Mae Shafer Vann was born in Mart, TX on January 16, 1919, and went to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. As a young mother of two, she worked as a school crossing guard which led to her career with the San Antonio Police Department as a dispatcher, helping to infiltrate the “911” emergency call system and answered the very first “911” call here in San Antonio. She retired after 28 years with the SAPD in 1989. Her faith in the Lord got her and her family through any situation. She would always say “Don’t worry, it’s just rough right now, but it will get better. Just trust God”. She was a generous, loving and caring person always putting people before herself. She loved everyone unconditionally. She loved life. She is now walking the streets of Gold. Even though we, her family and friends will miss her terribly, we take comfort in knowing she is with our Lord and Savior.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Melvin Vann and her parents John and Carrie Shafer; 5 sisters; and 2 brothers. She is survived by her two children, Daughter, Carolyn Dugger and son, John Vann; four grandchildren, Donna Quiroga (Kenny), Michael Dugger (Dana White), John “Trey” Dugger (Jenise) and Amanda Vann Worchel; nine great-grandchildren, McKenzi & Kyleigh Quiroga, Micah Cross (Cody), Daulton Dugger, Aleksander Worchel, Chelsea Wilson (Cade), Roper McDonald, Jessica and Logan White; four great-great-grandchildren, Tynlea Wilson, Cyndea Jean Wilson, Anslea Wilson and Kanyon Cross.
