On April 9, 2021 Harold Simon passed away at the age of 89 after a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born, raised, and passed away in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1949, he received a scholarship from the Ford Motor Company for placing 2nd in a national contest for designing and modeling an automobile. After a brief enrollment at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburg, he returned to Texas and obtained his degree in Architectural Engineering from Texas Tech University. Shortly after graduating, Hal joined the Air Force and completed pilot training in Marianna, Florida. After active duty, Hal joined the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel. During his career as an architect, he was a member of the AIA and CSI (Construction Specifications Institute). Hal also proudly served as a member of the Northside Optimist Club of S. A. where during the Christmas season he could be found selling Christmas trees at their lot. Hal was the consummate model builder all throughout his life. He could build anything. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating in his younger years, and was an excellent marksman. Hal will always be remembered for his patience, his wonderful sense of humor, and his love for his family.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ada Rice Simon and Harold M. Simon. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Joy Willett Simon; daughters, Debbie Godfrey and Linda Ertel (Chuck); and grandsons, Brandon Godfrey (Raidis), Logan Godfrey, and Conner Ertel.
