Harold N. Souder, 79 years of age, passed away peacefully at home on June 4, 2011. He fought a long and courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Harold was born in Corinth, Kentucky, on January 8, 1932.
He was the 6th of 7 children and came to San Antonio while serving in the United States Air Force in 1950 through 1955.
It was then that he met the love of his life, Juanita Porter. They married in 1955 and had three devoted children.
Harold worked for Howard Aero for many years before transitioning to the insurance industry. He had a 36 year career with Farmers Insurance Group, during which he received numerous awards. He was known for his personal service to his clients.
Harold loved the Lord and was an active member of Laurel Heights United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Board of Trustees, the Church Mice, Believer's Sunday School Class and the Kitchen Guild.
Mission work was very important to Harold. His witness took many forms including building wheel chair ramps for the disabled, working with Habitat for Humanity, serving at the SAMM shelter and heading up Angel Food ministries at his church.
Harold was involved in numerous clubs throughout his life including Mended Hearts, Varsity Optimist Club, and Woodmen of the World, to name a few. In his free time he enjoyed working with his hands on anything from restoration to numerous wood working projects to landscaping.
He had a native curiosity that led him to rebuilding cars, grafting trees, making wine, and building and renovating houses for his family.
He was generous to a fault - he loved helping people. He was known among his friends and family as a very creative, thoughtful and loving father and friend.
Harold had a great sense of humor and loved making people smile. He used humor to help those around him even when facing the tough rigors of chemotherapy and radiation.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Juanita, and his children: Benny Souder and wife, Joyce; Penny Souder and Tom Calhoun, Genny Campbell and husband, Nick; grandchildren: Paul and Luke Campbell. He is also survived by his siblings: Marguerite Colson, Betty Jane Delaney, Edith Lattimer, Elton Souder, Edward Souder and Marcy Nicholson; and a loving extended family including numerous nieces and nephews.
