Mr. Hooker was my band director at Robert G. Cole High School. He  had a profound influence on me and I think of him often after 55 years.

He was in John Philip Sousa's Band as I have told countless people. I remember how much he hated the use of the William Tell Overture for the theme of the Lone Ranger.

A great man and sorely missed!

For the family of Vernon Hooker,

I recently learned of the death of Vernon Hooker, my high school band director, at Pensacola high School, and one of the most influential people in my life.  Not only was he an excellent teacher, but he seemed to many of his students to be the ideal man, friend and artist. He and his wife Pat worked hard and shared an exciting, adventurous, and theatrical life in music. They were models for us.

Our band was great in our maroon and white uniforms with white shoes. The majorettes and flag twirlers, managed by Pat Hooker were spectacular and seemed to have flashy new outfits and maneuvers every year. In parades, the whole band performed a dance step to the music of “St. Louis Blues. We wore lights on our hats and uniforms when we did formations at football half times.

Our drum major wore a tiger Costume  and head (made by me) when he did cartwheels with a fire baton.  We put on a musical show in the spring, for which I remember designing and building sets. Our band and soloists won first division medals in district and state music contests. He and his wife Pat were the most interesting adults I knew as a teenager, so I decided to become a band director.

After a year as a music major in college, and a short time as a set designer, I graduated as a design major in the Fine Arts department. My husband and I ran an art gallery for a few years, and then became filmmakers for most of our lives, myself as an animation and special effects teacher.  

I often remember Vernon and Pat Hooker, what wonderful people they were, the fun and comradeship of being in the band, and what a big influence they had on us. I am sorry they are gone, but the things they did will live on forever in the minds of their students. I still play in a town band at the age of 78 in Lexington, MA

My condolences to the Hooker family on your loss. I have many fond memories of my twirling days with your family, and you all hold a special place in my heart. I know Mr. Hooker will be deeply missed by many.

Mr. Hooker was our band director at Pensacola High School in the 50s.  He was a great guy and we all loved him.  How wonderful to have had such a long and successful life.  I am 73 years old and am glad that one of our classmates provided us notice of his funeral.  The lovely thing is that after a period of grieving, you will be left only wonderful memories of this special man.

beloved Pat.  We met Vernon and Pat when we moved to
The Georgian in early 1980s.  They both were active and
always friendly to everyone here.  They will always be
remembered at The Georgian.

Dear Harry and Beth, I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of your dear father.  What a wonderful, generous and loving soul he was.  I can't imagine what life was all about growing up with two such wonderfully gifted parents as Pat and Vernon Hooker.  They managed so well on all of our many band trips staying with us the whole time. To a person, we all loved them.  In those three years through every type of teenage hijinks I never once saw him lose his temper.

Please know that all of you are in my heart, on my mind and in my prayers.

I like to think that Vernon is picking up right where he left off in his last conversation with Pat and your brother Gene.  He was truly a sweet guy and his suffering is done.  Lean on family and friends as you work through the pain of your loss while being thankful that he is in a better place.  My best wishes and heartfelt sympathies to you and all of the family.

You knew that your Dad was my music teacher at Blount Jr. High and in later life a brother Mason.  He was a great gentleman and I know you will miss him.

To the family of Vernon Hooker,
Vernon was a fellow teacher and a friend. We played many 'gigs' together thru the years. I am saddened by his passing, but happy that I had the chance to know him. What a happy, wonderful man.

Vernon & Pat nicely allowed me to live with them during my high school years when I needed a loving family.  They just had so much love to share with everyone. Surprisingly, Beth & Papa Vernon survived my miserable attempts at learning to cook. I guess God finally needed a new Band Director.  All our lives have been blessed by knowing him, it was an honor.

I would always watch Beth with Pat when they would practice and Harry was in the ROTC group with me and every Monday he would help me learn the words.
