Born on September 9, 1930, in San Antonio, to Leo S. and Dorothea (Schlesinger)Karren. Herby spent his life deeply rooted in the community that shaped him. He graduated from Jefferson High School before attending Southern Methodist University (SMU) on a tennis scholarship. He later earned his law degree from St. Mary’s Law School, laying the foundation for a career marked by dedication and integrity.
Herby proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Exemplifying courage and commitment during a pivotal time in history, he was forever proud of his country and to be an American.
During his life, he built a successful career in commercial real estate and residential developments in the San Antonio area.
A man of many interests and enduring friendships, Herby was an avid golfer throughout his life. He remained a devoted supporter of SMU football and was a Legacy member at Oak Hills Country Club, where he served as President and was inducted into the club Hallof Fame. He shared countless rounds of golf with friends old and new, particularly his best golf buddies, Jack & Mike. It was golf that took Herby & Linda to Scotland where they fell in love with all that Scotland had to offer. They enjoyed many trips there both with friends and on their own and Linda will cherish those enduring memories forever.
Herby’s generosity touched every corner of his life—from family to colleagues to lifelong friends. He had an unwavering belief in the potential of others and consistently encouraged those around him to strive for excellence while living with honesty and purpose. His warmth, encouragement, and steadfast values left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda B. Karren; daughters Lynn Marlowe of Jacksonville, Florida, and Lisa Seigel (husband Charles) of Dallas, Texas; as well as two grandchildren, Ronen and Zarra Marlowe.
Herby was preceded in death by his parents; sister Alice Rosenstein and her husband Max; and sister Josephine Prashner and her husband Gene.
A longtime member of the Temple Beth-El community in San Antonio, Herby’s faith was a quiet but steady presence throughout his life. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire lives lived with kindness, strength, and integrity. A special thank you to our sister, Krista and her husband Rich for their constant help and support during this journey.
