
Hoky spent two and a half years in the Marine Corps being discharged in December 1945. He attended the University of Texas where he was a member of the Tau chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Hoky graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
He also attended the University of Michigan and the law college of St. Mary's University. Mr. Phillips engaged in oil and ranching activities from 1945 until the date of his death. He was a member of San Antonio Country Club, the Argyle and Butler Country Club and was a former member of the German Club and the Order of the Alamo. Hoky was on the Board of Trustees at Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth from 1963 to 1992 when he was elected emeritus.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Phillips; daughter, Dr. Serena Louise Phillips; sons, Martin Harding Phillips and Herbert H. South; sisters, Jane Houghton Phillips and Susanna Phillips Kelley and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Honorary Pallbearers include Sam Maclin, Dr. Dan Russell, Dr. James Nixon, Charles Hanor, Bill Johnson, Dr. Joe Trevino, A.W. Greer, Nathan DeSantis, Robert Thompson, Robert Hewitt, Marshall Kuykendall, Salom Adham, Roger Hill, John Utz and Dr. Richard Latuska.
