Herlinda Gonzalez Luna, a devoted wife, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, sister, godmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully and calmly on July 17, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born on June 6, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas, Herlinda—affectionately known as "Linda"—lived a life defined by unwavering faith and love for her family. She was the matriarch and heart of a large and loving family, and her life was a testament to her faith, especially Our Blessed Mother.
In 1956, Linda married the love of her life, Joe Renteria Luna. Together, they shared 64 joyful years of marriage until Joe’s passing in 2020. Their enduring partnership was grounded in mutual devotion, shared values, and an unshakeable commitment to their Catholic faith.
Linda is survived by her five children: Norma Chamberlain (Howard), Sylvia Luna, Josie Rendon, Dr. Joseph R. Luna (Yolanda Gutierrez), and Louie Gonzales Luna (Irma). She was the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren: Katherine Ann Luna Lawson (Gilbert), Lisa Marie Fox, Marsha Nicole Fox, Dr. Pablo Cortez Teveni III, Natalie Marie McDonald (Logan), Dr. Laura Maricala Teveni (David Sanchez), Michelle Teveni, Miguel Cristobal Teveni (Griselda), Janet D. Hernandez-Ayers (Pete), Jerry F. Rendon II (Dora), Jacob M. Rendon (Irene), Isaac Joseph Luna, MD(Laura McCracken), Adam Quinn Luna, Christopher Joseph Luna and 25 great-grandchildren, and she leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Severiano and Maria Gonzalez, her siblings: Merced G. ( Julia), Guillermo “Willie” G. (Vicky), Dolores Garcia (Enrique), Sara G, Castano (Edward) and she is survived by her younger brother, Albert Gonzalez (Dora). Linda is now reunited in eternal peace with her husband and loved ones who went before her.
Linda grew up in Cementville, Texas. A neighborhood on San Antonio’s Northside, where she attended Alamo Heights High School. Her professional life was centered around culinary and “waitress” (server) service, where she worked for Luby’s, Broadway National Bank, and Alamo Heights School District Cafeterias and other jobs, (Dobbs House, SA Intl Airport Ie. ). Her warmth and hospitality were evident in every meal she served.
A devout Catholic, Linda was a dedicated member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church for nearly nine decades (1938-2025). She served in numerous ministries including the ACTS retreat program, Eucharistic Ministry, and both the English and Spanish Choirs. One of her first ministries included the various roles in the Cursillo Movement of “De Colores”. As a proud Guadalupana, her faith was a guiding force in her life. As the former "President" of the Guadalupanas, she leaves a legacy of servitude like feeding and clothing the poor, ministering at the Battered Women's Shelter, and arranging the activities for the church festival and organizing many taco sales. After attending the Cursillo Movement in 1983, she expanded her ministry work into the prison system through Kairos and Bill Glass Ministries, often baking hundreds—sometimes thousands—of cookies to share God’s love with others and the inmates.
Linda treasured family gatherings, whether celebrating weddings, quinceañeras, or Sunday dinners. She was a spirited fan of the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys and found great joy in dancing to Spanish and Tejano music with her husband Joe. She loved attending church, and savoring meals with loved ones—especially her grandson’s brisket. She was known for her colorful sense of clothing style, love of bright jewelry, pearls, and her meaningful collection of rosaries and religious artifacts. It is often said that when you walked into Grandma Luna’s home, the 1st words you would hear were, “Como Estas y Que quieres de comer?”.
Her legacy of faith, and family devotion lives on in all who were blessed to know her.
In closing, the family would like to extend its sincere gratitude for Linda’s medical care to the staffs of Wellmed (Greenway Park) and of Texas Health Care Solutions ( especially Nurse Reanna, Bethany and Ana ), We would like to personally thank Martha and Tiburcio for their weekly visits with the Eucharist and prayers. Finally, Linda looked forward to the meals provided by Meals on Wheels(SA).
