Ben was born on July 6, 1947, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Muriel “Babe” and Howard E. Davis, Sr., who instilled in him the values of hard work and generosity, values that Ben would spend a lifetime exemplifying.
Upon graduation from his beloved University of Notre Dame in 1969, Ben was drafted into the Army to serve in the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Vietnamese Campaign Ribbon with Three Battle Stars, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his heroic service to his country. After relocation to Ft. Sam Houston, Ben attended law school at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. While there, Ben served on the Law Journal and authored an article that was cited by the Supreme Court of the United States. San Antonio became Ben’s forever home where he established himself as one of the most respected trial attorneys in South Texas. Ben was a dedicated servant to his clients, and he valiantly advocated for them until shortly before his death. He was known by his colleagues not only for his tremendous skills in the courtroom but also for his unwavering fairness and respect for all those who participated in the legal process.
Ben was a loud and proud Democrat, who leaves behind a tremendous legacy of service to all the communities in which he was involved. He was an advocate for youth sports, particularly baseball; a patron of the arts, especially his beloved Majestic Theatre; the Director of the Alamo Irish Classic Notre Dame Baseball Tournament for over thirty years; a participant in over 70 ACTS retreats; a two-time recipient of the Notre Dame Club of San Antonio, “Notre Dame Man of the Year Award''; a founding sponsor of the Civil Justice Foundation; a proud member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association; a member of the Board of Directors for University of the Incarnate Word; a member of the Board of Trustees for TMI Episcopal; and numerous other causes to which he so generously donated his time, talent, and support.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Babe and Howie. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jan Davis; his children Patrick (Kat), Cara, Kelly, Heather, Charles, and Waldo Davis; his grandchildren Rainey, Boston, Finn Davis, Chavela, Sista, and Barnes Davis; his siblings Donna Vanderbeck (Jack) , Jack Davis (Sophie), and Marlene White (John); and numerous extended family members, chosen family, and dear friends.
The Davis family extends their gratitude to Dr. Gregory Jackson, Dr. Jose Miguel Iturbe, and Amanda Gartner, APRN, for their steadfast care and compassion.
Ben’s generosity knew no bounds. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Baseball (giveto.nd.edu); Children in Need (childreninneedus.org); and San Antonio Pets Alive! (sanantoniopetsalive.org).
