

Huey Pierce Stewart, age 88, passed away on April 6, 2017 in Tyler, Texas. Huey Pierce Stewart was born on February 25, 1929 in Gandy, LA to Solomon Mack Stewart, Sr. and Nellie Adeline McCormick Stewart. After his retirement from the US Air Force, he graduated from Southwest State Teachers College of San Marcos, TX in l964.
Huey originated the Industrial Arts program at Cole Jr.-Sr. High School on Fort Sam Houston, where he taught for almost 20 years. He was a true believer in education and served as vice president of the local Association of Texas Professional Educators when the young teacher's organization was active in preventing the unionization of Texas schools. He also worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Palestine as a Corrections Officer until he retired in 1984. Huey loved people, and he loved to share his faith in Christ in tangible ways. This led him to serve on volunteer missions in Mexico, the Philippines, and the former Czechoslovakia.
He was a long-time member of Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, where he taught Sunday School for several years, and, more recently, a member of the Southern Oaks Baptist Church in Tyler, TX.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Norma L. Stewart and survived by their three children: Dr. Mack D. Stewart and wife, Sandy; Mark P. Stewart and wife, Jane; and daughter, Cheryl Lynn Stewart Foster and husband, Keith Sorrells.
He leaves seven grandchildren: Dustin R. Stewart, Mark D. Stewart, Laura Lee Stewart, Holland P. Stewart, Andrew H. Stewart, Jack M. Stewart, and Travis R. Dorsey and one great-grandson, Gavin Fort Stewart. Other survivors include step-mother, Nannie Faye Shelton and sister-in-law, Willie Bess Stewart, nephews and families of Tony Mack Stewart, Thomas Craig, Jr., Cecil Dwight Stewart and nieces and families of Virginia Sue Craig Dupree, Karolyn Dawn Etheridge Eakin, Myrtis Iva Lee Etheridge Evans.
